the Washington Wine Grape Growers Association

Vicky will be talking about the Challenge of Explosive Growth. For over 30 years, Vicky Scharlau has developed and managed organizations, projects, and programs across the US and Mexico.  Vicky has worked for the Wisconsin and Washington Departments of Agriculture, the Washington Apple Commission, and the Washington State Horticultural Association on state, national and international issues.

In 1994, she opened a consulting company, 501 Consultants, which focuses solely on non-profit organizations. Today she will talk about her largest client -the Washington Association of Wine Grape Growers where she serves as Executive Director.

Vicky was raised on a small dairy farm in Wisconsin and earned a BS in Agricultural Journalism and Agricultural Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Masters of Public Administration at the University of Washington's Evans School of Public Affairs.

Scharlau is a Class 10 graduate of the Washington Agriculture and Forestry Leadership Program and has served in volunteer, board and officer positions with numerous organizations.  She and her husband have a son in the Navy and live in a renovated apple warehouse outside Wenatchee.

The First Weekend of Winterfest Schedule

Hi Tom and Happy New Year from Champaign, Il!

I especially like the Older Folk Realizations, but of course we aren't there yet but can see it coming!  Right??

Keep up the good work and have fun this year in Rotary.

I joined the Champaign West Rotary Club in May and am getting acclimated.  I was voted in as a Board member so will start that in July.  It's a club of 150 members and one in which there are lots of professional younger members, both male and females. So, a great deal of energy.   Our January Annual Fundraiser is a Talent Show and Auction.

Your Rotary Friend and Partner,
Richard  Riggs

(Richard was previously a member of Wenatchee Downtown and served for several years as the Assistant District Governor for our club.)

The Dean Allen - Shine On Ski-A-Thon and Scholarship Fund promotes the development in young adults who demonstrate qualities of courage, honor, compassion, and commitment by overcoming adversity in their lives or an individual who exemplifies these qualities while helping others overcome their adversities. In Dean's short time on earth he struggled with adversity and rose like a phoenix. Dean had a unique gift of rising above his own struggles and somehow had the ability and the drive to shine. No one or thing could keep Dean's spirit from shining. Dean believed in tomorrow and his own personal growth yet never failed to help others in their pursuits of their growth and vision. The Dean Allen - Shine On Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance for college bound - graduating High School students or GED recipient through annual scholarships for college expenses. Qualified students from our local High Schools are eligible. Our goal is to ultimately provide a scholarship each year to a deserving student from each of these schools.  Selected candidates, by way of their demonstrated growth in overcoming adversity or helping others overcome adversity will perpetuate Dean's legacy.

Our Next Club Mixer will be on Wednesday, January 20

Start the year off with some fun and join your fellow members for an entertaining mixer at Rancho Grande on the Manson HIghway by Lake Chelan Shores.  It will start as usual at 5:30.  What not a winery?  You can get all kinds of refreshments at the bar in the Restaurant.

The 2016 Century Challenge and Cycle de Vine are now only 23 weeks away.  The date to reserve is Saturday June 25, 2016.

This year we have a new website for the rides.  Take a look at www.cyclechelan.com.  Both rides are now incorporated into one website which makes maintenance much easier and enables the maintenance of information that is common to both rides in one place.  All of the old web addresses now point to the new website.  These include: www.centuryride.com, www.chelancenturychallenge.com, www.tourdechelan.com and www.chelancycledevine.com

The 2016 Cycle de Vine will be a new experience for the rider.  Gone is the need to ride out along the Northshore or Southshore and then back into Lake Chelan.  The 2016 ride will include a trip across the lake.  The ride will be a circular tour of the Lake Chelan Valley wineries.  The lake crossing will of course be subject to weather conditions.  Stand by for additional information.

The Rotary Club of Kelowna, Ogopogo is once again presenting our exciting, rewarding and fun filled ADVENTURES IN TOURISM program to selected high school students from across Canada, the North Western United States, Australia and Scotland.
The ADVENTURES IN TOURISM program will involve up to 20 high school students in an intense five- day exploration of many leading tourism facilities within the beautiful Okanagan Valley. During their packed program, participants will be given unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to the inner workings of a wide array of some of Canada's leading destination resorts, golf clubs, wineries and First Nations' attractions. The students will also be treated to the very best hospitality; being welcomed into Rotarian homes for the duration of their stay. The Lake Chelan Rotary Board in December authorized the expenditure of two Interact members to attend this even.

2016 Lake Chelan Rotary Scholarships
Due Date:  April 1, 2015
Are you a dedicated student? Have you overcome considerable obstacles? Is the cost of going to college a financial strain on your family? No matter what your talents, abilities, or circumstances, Lake Chelan Rotary wants to help.

Lake Chelan Rotary supports scholarships through the Lake Chelan Rotary Community & International Fund ("The Fund").  "The Fund's" scholarships are given to Chelan and Manson High School seniors pursuing their dreams and goals at colleges, universities, and trade or technical schools. These scholarships are made possible through the fundraising efforts of Lake Chelan Rotary and generous donors who have a passion to provide higher education opportunities to worthy students.

In 2014, the "The Fund" awarded $22,000 to students in Chelan and Manson High Schools.

Application Review
Every application is reviewed by members of "The Fund's" volunteer Scholarship Selection Committee. The application is reviewed first for eligibility as Lake Chelan Rotary must adhere to the specific eligibility criteria established by scholarship fund donors.  After review, scholarship applications are evaluated on an objective and competitive basis, considering academic and nonacademic factors such as financial need, leadership, community service, and special circumstances.
