Summer Update
 Mara Division Academic Day

Hello everyone,

I hope you are all having a good time. We are all doing well here. On Saturday 26th July, our school  hosted the Mara Division Academic Day. This is an event that is held every year to award the schools that would have done well the previous year in different areas. Nkoilale school was the best overall in the division last year. We managed to get all the three big trophies.

The first one was for being number one school in last year's national examination (K.C.P.E.). We had a mean score of 310.
The second one was for being the National champions in Music festivals. We were privledged to have performed our Maasai folk song to the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya.

The last one, was for being the reining champions in soccer in Narok County.

Our ceremony was attended by our Member of Parliament, Member of County Government and other big personalities from this region. I was so happy to be part of this and I believe you are too. You are part of us and I thought that I should share with you.

With regards,       GRACE

Our Program on August 5

Bruce Falkins,  our District Governor this year, and his wife Donna will be with us to get us educated about the activities of District 5060 and his goals for the District and our club.

Bruce & Donna Falkins

Bruce was born and raised in Vancouver, BC and attended the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, completing his degree in Business Management.

With Bruce's passion for sales and marketing it took him to several Multi- National Corporations, including Chevron Canada, Laidlaw Waste Systems and Ecolab, a chemical company, where he accepted a position as Territory Manager. This eventually brought him to the Okanagan Valley. Starting their own business they founded Falkins Advertising (a promotional product business). Bruce has been very active in this industry including sitting on the board of directors for the Promotional Products Association of Canada.

Bruce joined the Rotary Club of Kelowna Sunrise in 1998, holding many positions at club level, including, Fellowship, Membership, Youth Exchange, and Ways and Means chairs. He then served as President in Rotary's Centennial year 2004-05. In 2009 Bruce was presented with the District Foundation Service Award for outstanding service in promoting The Rotary Foundation through the Paul Harris Society. He was also Public Relations Chair for the District in 2009-2010, before assuming the Assistant Governor position in 2010-2011 and 2011-2012. Bruce is also proud to be one of the original facilitators for the RLI course in the District and has continued to participate in all sessions to date.

Donna has stalwartly supported Bruce in business as well as in the community. She has served her pet project, the Heart and Stoke Foundation, for many years including being chair for the Ladner South Delta area.

Bruce and Donna are both multiple Paul Harris Fellows and Bequest Society Members. Outside of Rotary, Bruce enjoys reading, gardening, travelling and attempting to play golf. Donna and Bruce are very proud of their two grown children and their two young grandchildren.

Potpourri from your Editor

Our awesome small projects committee was back at work this past week doing the patio project at Regency Manor.  Thanks to Kit Couchee, Randy Brooks and Scott McKellar.  Lexy seems to think they thrive on pouring concrete in 100 degree heat!
The regular Board meeting will meet at 11:30 a.m. at Campbell's this Friday, August 1.  If you need them to consider anything, or just want to do a makeup stop by.  They meet at the back of the downstairs Bistro.

All of you committee chairs can find out who signed up for your committee by clicking on this document link:   2014-2015 Committee SignUps.  President Jeff may be adding to your committee as he reviews who has not stepped up yet to serve.

"One door closes, another door opens.  It's all about action.  When something ends - a job, a relationship, one's good health - you just don't stand by and wait for something good to happen.  You can't depend on luck or anybody else to pull you out of the situation.  You must use your own efforts to push a new door open, kick it open if you have to, using that setback as an inspiration to move ahead and make a new beginning for yourself."

The Rotary International President wants us to have a Rotary Day in order to Light Up Rotary.  What do you think?  What is your idea?  Send your suggestions to the editor.  Last week no one sent any suggestions, so you have to look at this bright promotion again!

RI President Gary C.K. Huang is urging all Rotary members to Light Up Rotary by organizing a Rotary Day in 2014-15. The concept is simple: hold a fun, informal event in your community to introduce the public to your club and Rotary. You'll not only improve Rotary's image in your community, you'll also boost interest in joining your club.

Host a Rotary Day

Any club, big or small, can host a Rotary Day. Neighboring clubs can pool their resources and co-host an event -- even entire districts can come together for a large-scale Rotary Day. Here are some ideas for your Rotary Day:

  • An outdoor picnic or barbecue
  • A sporting event or concert
  • An event associated with a public parade or festival
  • An event at a museum, art gallery, or cultural center
  • A reception or buffet dinner

50% Off!!  If you sponsor your spouse for membership in Lake Chelan Rotary the second membership is only one half of the annual dues of the first membership.  For more information please contact membership chair Bob Sheehan at  [email protected].    Offer expires never!
