County Board Approves 2014 Balanced Budget

County Board Allows Beekeeping and Hens in Unincorporated Areas
Lake County has amended the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) to allow the keeping of bees, hens, and hoophouses used exclusively for local food production on residential properties in unincorporated areas. The UDO sets standards for the establishment and maintenance of beehives, chicken coops, and hoophouses. The following lot size requirements also apply:
- Two beehives are allowed on residential lots up to and including 10,000 square feet of lot area, with one additional beehive allowed for each extra 10,000 square feet.
- Hens may be kept on residential lots of a minimum of 10,000 square feet in area; the number of hens allowed on residential properties be dependent on the lot size, ranging from six hens on lots of a minimum of 10,000 square feet up to 12 hens on lots of a minimum 80,000 square feet.
- Hoophouses are allowed, 50 square feet in size for each 10,000 square feet of residential lot area.
These changes to the UDO are part of a series of sustainability initiatives that support local food production in the unincorporated areas. More Information.

Lake County Wins Lawsuit Challenging Creation of Elections Commission

Lake County Receives AAA Bond Rating from Two Top Rating Agencies
Lake County has again received a AAA bond rating -the highest government rating-from the nation's two largest bond rating agencies - Moody's Investors Services, Inc., and Standard & Poor's. The rating serves as an indicator of the County's general economic health. More Information.
New Water Meters For Some Lake County Residents Lake County Public Works is replacing 20,600 water meters with new automated  meters, which provide for accurate, timely, and reliable reading without having to gain access to customers' properties. The new meters -which will be replaced at no cost to customers-will be able to identify high water usage and potential leaks, and customers will be able to access their water usage and account information conveniently on-line. March 2014 Primary
Offices to be nominated at the March 18 General Primary Election include County Clerk, Sheriff, Treasurer, Regional Superintendent of Schools, County Board Members Districts 3, 6, 8, 9, 10, 17 and 19, and North Shore Sanitary Trustees Districts 3 and 5. Precinct Committeemen for the two major political parties and the City of Lake Forest Aldermen will be elected at the General Primary Election.
Candidate Information
Courtesy petition packets for established political party candidates are available online at LakeCandidatePower.info or obtain copies at the County Clerk's office until Dec. 2. Lake County candidates for local office (other than the City of Lake Forest) file their petition packets at the County Clerk's office from Nov. 25 -Dec. 2. As always, seek competent legal counsel when completing petition packets. Visit http://elections.il.gov for the 2014 Candidate's Guide and 2014 Election and Campaign Disclosure Calendar.
Verify Petition Signers
Candidates can take advantage of the County Clerk's free service to verify signatures on their nominating sheets. Confirming the accuracy of signatures, addresses and districts before filing can prevent objections to petitions and the possibility of a candidate being removed from the ballot. An on-screen display of voter's registration status, current address, and signature allow easy reference. The search will also confirm a registered voter's address is within the specific district the candidate is seeking to serve. Candidates and their volunteers may reserve a computer terminal in the Clerk's office by calling Todd Govain in Voter Services at 847.377.2292. Office hours are 9 to 5 Monday through Friday.
Deputy Registrar Classes
Pursuant to the Illinois Election Code, deputy registrar training is administered by the County Clerk's office and classes are not sponsored by, nor affiliated with, any political organization.

Rollins Road will be closed between Illinois Route 83 and the shopping center entrances east of Illinois Route 83. Both Illinois Route 83 and the shopping center entrances will be open at all times.

Recycle-o-Rama, Nov. 16
The Vernon Hills Park District will be partnering with SWALCO and Westfield Hawthorn Mall to host the 2013 America Recycle's Day collection event. Please bring your old electronics to the south lot in the Westfield Hawthorn Mall. We are also accepting eyeglasses, gym shoes, and batteries.
