Board Acts to Protect Against Animal-Aggressive Dogs
At its January 15 meeting, the Lake County Board adopted amendments to an ordinance that better protects the public and other animals from animal-aggressive dogs. In cases where a dog seriously injures or kills another owned animal, Lake County Animal Care and Control can immediately impound the dog and conduct an investigation, which could lead to more serious consequences, from requiring it to be muzzled when outside, up to humane euthanasia. Previously, the ordinance had requirements for dangerous or vicious dogs that attacked people or other animals, but did not contain more stringent requirements for dogs that seriously injured or killed another owned animal. For more information, visit the Lake County Animal Care and Control websiteor call 847-949-9925.

Program Provides Affordable Housing for Lake County Families and Stabilizes Neighborhoods
Lake County is working to stabilize neighborhoods by rehabilitating foreclosed homes and selling or renting those homes to Lake County individuals and families at affordable prices. The County received about $6 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development under the newly created Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) to stabilize neighborhoods and communities that have been hardest hit by the foreclosure crisis.
To date, the Lake County NSP has:
* Rehabbed and sold more than 30 single-family homes to low to moderate income homebuyers * Rehabbed 18 rental units
* Begun rehabilitation on an additional 10 single-family homes
* Reinvested all sales proceeds back into the program to produce more affordable homes
These NSP target areas are located in the Village of Mundelein, the City of North Chicago, the Village of Round Lake Beach, the City of Waukegan, and the City of Zion.

Lake County PASSAGE Network Continues to Grow
Lake County PASSAGE provides real-time traffic information about local roads, so you can anticipate, plan and avoid gridlock. The PASSAGE intelligent transportation system uses interconnected signals to manage traffic flow and monitor traffic conditions.
Through the use of federal congestion relief funds, the City of Highland Park and the Lake County Department of Transportation recently incorporated the traffic signals in Highland Park into PASSAGE. The traffic signals have been re-timed, monitoring cameras have been added, and a real-time connection to the Highland Park Police Department has been established. These upgrades will provide better guidance to motorists in this area of Lake County.

Flu Cases on the Rise
Cases of the flu are on the rise across the country. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported widespread influenza activity in 47 states, including Illinois. The flu is a contagious, viral respiratory illness. Symptoms can range from mild to severe, which could lead to death. In order to reduce the risk of getting the flu, it is important to get the flu vaccination each year. Everyone 6 months of age and older should be vaccinated, especially pregnant women, young children, people 65 years of age and older, and anyone with underlying health conditions like asthma, diabetes, or a weakened immune system. Visit the Lake County Health Department's website for more information about the flu, or read the CDC's advice on three actions you can take to help prevent the flu.
