From the CM Health Office
To date there have been no documented cases of the influenza virus (flu) among the student body or staff at Catholic Memorial School.
However, the Federal Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that influenza is now widespread throughout Massachusetts and Mayor Thomas Menino has declared Boston a "flu emergency." More than 700 confirmed cases of the flu have been reported in Boston.
This year's flu strain is particularly virulent, but it is covered by the vaccine. As a result, people who were vaccinated may get sick as well, but their symptoms tend to be milder with a shorter duration than those who are not vaccinated. If you were vaccinated, you may have some of the same symptoms: cough, sore throat, fever... [read more] |

Varsity wrestlers Brian Ferrara '14 and Paul Curtin '13 (above) won the Belmont Tournament on January 5, with Mark Gutierrez '14 and Mike Aquino '15 coming in 2nd. Also placing: Sean Sullivan '14 (3rd) and Dylan Wolusky '14 (4th). The team followed that up with a victory over MC on Jan. 9. CM Parents: watch your mail for information on the upcoming Athletic Awards Night Ad Book. This book contains pictures of all of the teams for all sports, summaries of all accomplishments of the teams through the year as well as special presentations. It contains the names of all members of the FCMAA, ads from sponsors as well as parents' messages to athletes from grades 7-12. For only $25, you can put in a message to your favorite Knight to let him know how proud you are of all his accomplishments (and receive a free copy of the book). We hope that you will support this book with a message to your son. For additional information, contact Sue Sullivan by email or by calling 617-750-3253.
Get the latest scores and news on the CM Twitter feed, or in-game updates and commentary from @CMSuperFan. Varsity basketball (8-2) has been in the top-20 polls each week this season. They face SJP tonight. Varsity hockey (8-2) is currently ranked #2 in the state and faces #1 BC High on Wednesday night at UMass-Boston.
Ryan Reid '13, Hanif Conrad '14, Matt Malone '15, and Andreis Dixon '13 continue to earn 1st and 2nd-place finishes for varsity track, which faces St. John's today. And the varsity swim team has earned several sectional and state qualifications, with Alex Young earning the most recent entry in the 50-freestyle against Xaverian last week. The new CM cookbook, A Winning Recipe for Every Knight has arrived and can be purchased in the Main Office. The cookbook is only $10 and will make a wonderful Birthday, Valentine's Day or Mother's Day gift, so pick up your copy and another copy or two to have on hand when you need a gift. All proceeds go back to support all Athletes at CM. View all team scores/schedules on the winter sports homepage. |
Athlete Profile: Chris Lee '14
CV: Junior. Swim team co-captain. Finished 15th at states last year in the 200-yd. freestyle and 16th in the 500. Qualified in three events for states this year to date.
The team: We've got senior captains Alex Young and Dylan Ryan leading us. We're stronger than most years. We've come a lot closer in every event and every meet. This team has bonded a lot more.
Highlight: This Friday, we face Malden Catholic. They don't have a diving team (either) so it'll be a level playing field.
Heartbreaker: We lost to Xaverian last Friday. We were winning by a bunch of points and its lowly slipped away.
Young blood: Matt Chipman '15 and Matt Young '15 are definitely coming up, and Liam Grady '15 is almost into states. We've also got middle-schooler Miles Francis '17 training with us.

Distinguished visitors
This past week brought two distinguished politicians to Baker Street. On Tuesday morning, January 15, Representative Byron Rushing (above) addressed the eighth grade on the topic of African American history in Boston.
On January 9, U.S. Congressman Stephen Lynch paid a visit to Donahue Hall, addressing students on the state of the Congress today and the personal motivations that prompted him to seek office. Read more...

Mothers & Sons in service
Last year, forty students from CM organized and operated a Winter Carnival at the Mather School in Dorchester. It was huge success - and a lot of fun! Along with running face-painting tables and a bean-bag toss, CM donated 90 bags of winter clothing to the young children of the Mather. The impact on everyone, young and old, was priceless.
This year, the Winter Carnival is set for February 8 from 6pm-8pm. And this year, we want to invite mothers to serve along with their sons! Join us as we make face painting, cupcake decorating, and craft tables even more special for this great elementary school community.
Contact Director of Campus Ministry Deb McCourt or Service Coordinator Andrew Malionek '89 to join us!
Can't make the carnival? Please consider sending gently-worn clothing for children in grades k-5 for our annual clothing drive to benefit the Mather School community. We will collect clothing during Catholic Schools Week (Jan. 28-Feb 1). Thank you.

Gifts from around the globe
We all know what a global community we have behind the doors at 235 Baker Street in West Roxbury. That community is represented, too, in the generous gifts that come to the CM advancement office each day, annual fund gifts that support the programs, curriculum and activities in which Knights excel.
From Wycliff Avenue in West Roxbury, a mere 1,056 feet away from our office, came one gift, and from Seoul, South Korea - over 6,800 miles away from CM - came another. So far this year, our most distant American postmark has come from Bainbridge Island, Washington (above), about 3,057 miles away from the home of the Knights.
Wherever your gift comes from, it will be put to good use! Please click here to support the 2013 CM Annual Fund. Thank you.
