Shoulders: Locked in the Box
|
If I was to name one musculoskeletal component that is undergoing the most serious devolution, it would be the shoulders. We don't use them much these days. Our world of motion has been squeezed into an invisible three-by-four-foot box that hangs in midair directly in front of us, covering an area roughly from the mid-thighs to the armpits. We reach into it to answer the phone, adjust the TV, and unlock the car door. We do little else outside this box; we take it with us wherever we go.
 | Give yourself some lovin' and get out of that box with some fun activities like the KVBL Kids on the Patch! (Click for video) |
Equipped with this invisible template that guides modern motion, we have simply forgotten to routinely use more than fifty percent of the shoulder's functions. As a result, when a task comes along that the shoulder is designed to do but that is outside the box, we start hurting. Paint the house? Wrestle a suitcase off of the overhead cargo bin in an airplane? Prune the apple tree? Rake leaves? Hit a tennis ball? These jobs are no big deal -- we have the muscles, joints, and bones to do all of them easily and safely.
What we're lacking is a fully functional range of motion, a capability that we were born with and developed as young children, but then lost, not because of age but because we started restricting our motion to the box and have done so for years. We left our shoulder functions outside, like tricycles, roller skates, and pogo sticks abandoned in the grass of the front yard to rust away. Shoulder pain is the price exacted for our neglect of them. - Pete
