In Celebration of Medicare and Medicaid: Keeping Us Healthy for 50 Years

Before 1966, roughly half of all seniors were uninsured, facing the possibility that the cost of health care could propel not only them, but their families, into poverty. Many disabled people, families with children, pregnant women and low-income working Americans were unable to afford the medical care they needed to stay healthy and productive.

It was 50 years ago that the landscape of health care in America changed forever when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the landmark amendment to the Social Security Act, giving life to the Medicare and Medicaid programs.

Medicare and Medicaid save lives, help people live longer and provide the peace of mind that comes with affordable health care that's there when you need it. Medicare and Medicaid have greatly reduced the number of uninsured Americans and have become the standard bearers for quality and innovation in American health care. No other program has changed the lives of Americans more than Medicare and Medicaid.

Medicare and Medicaid cover nearly 1 out of every 3 Americans; that's well over 100 million people. Today, about 55 million Americans depend on Medicare to cover 23 types of preventive services, including flu shots and diabetes screenings. Medicare also covers hospital stays, lab tests and critical supplies like wheelchairs as well as prescription drugs.

Medicaid provides comprehensive coverage to more than 70 million eligible children, pregnant women, low-income adults and people living with disabilities. It covers essential services like annual check-ups, care for new and expecting mothers and dental care for kids from low-income families.

Innovative and dedicated teams are working to continually improve the quality of life and care delivered under these programs. Medicare and Medicaid will continue to help transform and create a health care system that delivers better care, spends health care dollars more wisely and results in healthier people.

President Johnson would be heartened to know that the hard-fought efforts to improve our health care system have not only succeeded, but that America is on track to give even better access, higher quality care and improved health for the next 50 years and beyond.
TMF Launches Three New Webpages for Patients and Health Care Professionals

New pages provide comprehensive library of instructional resources as well as access to training

TMF's Quality Innovation Network Quality Improvement Organization (QIN-QIO) website http://www.tmfqin.org has a new page offering tools and resources for patients and their family caregivers as well as two new pages for health care professionals focusing on behavioral health and immunizations.

The Patient & Family page is a comprehensive resource for instructional information on topics including diabetes, heart health, medication management, Medicare as well as resources directed specifically at patients' family caregivers. Each category is additionally subdivided into more specific health care issues and tools for managing and maneuvering through the health care system.

Health care professionals can direct their patients to these resources for additional and supportive information. Physicians can download specific information from the page to give to their patients, or those caregivers who become familiar with the page can direct their patients to specific tools that can help them manage or improve their health condition.

The Behavioral Health Network page is an effort to convene an online community of primary care physicians, inpatient psychiatric facilities, hospitals and community stakeholders to identify and implement solutions to help Medicare beneficiaries who are suffering from depression and alcohol use disorders (AUD).

A concern among the medical community is the prevalence of undetected or misdiagnosed AUD and depression. According to the National Council for Behavioral Health and the Institute of Medicine, nearly 1 in 5 Medicare beneficiaries live with one or more mental health or substance use conditions.

By joining this network, health care professionals receive access to free resources and training to help to increase the screening rates for depression and AUDs of Medicare beneficiaries receiving care at primary care practices. They can also help reduce the 30-day readmission rate and increase follow-up care for patients discharged from inpatient psychiatric facilities.

TMF's Immunization Network page focuses on the eighth-leading cause of death in the United States - vaccine-preventable diseases such as influenza and pneumonia. Another vaccine-preventable disease is herpes zoster, commonly known as shingles. An estimated 1 million cases of this painful inflammatory disease are reported each year. These statistics are provided by the National Center for Health Statistics.

Despite the risks of these deadly diseases and the availability of effective vaccines, immunization rates for adults remain significantly low. Through the Immunizations Network, the TMF QIN-QIO engages a widespread community of traditional health care providers to increase education and awareness of these vaccine-preventable diseases, and to increase the immunization rates for these diseases.

As with free membership in any of TMF's networks, health care professionals and stakeholders who join these new networks will have access to tools and training to help increase the immunization rates and screening rates for depression and AUDs within the Medicare beneficiary population. Membership offers access to the latest news, resources, learning opportunities and forum discussions. Visit  http://www.tmfqin.org to learn more.
