We are pleased to announce that Tony Smith has been selected to serve as the Stone family foundation's new Executive Director. Tony was previously the acclaimed Superintendent of schools in Oakland, California where he led the struggling district for four years and focused on improving academic outcomes, fiscal solvency, community engagement, and organizational coherence. He brings with him a solid track record of accomplishment and a passion for making life better for young people. 


Prior to joining Oakland Unified School District Tony served as Deputy Superintendent for the San Francisco Unified School District and as Superintendent of the Emery Unified School District. He previously directed the Math, Science, Technology Initiative (MSTI) at the Emeryville Citywide Initiative and several major programs at the former Bay Area Coalition for Equitable Schools (BayCES), now known as The National Equity Project. Tony received his B.A. in English from the University of California, Berkeley in 1992, where he was captain of the football team before earning his Masters and Doctorate Degrees in the Division of Language and Literacy from Cal's Graduate School of Education.
