ADDITIONS TO CARTER COLLECTION AT ARCHIVES

The Sullivan County Department of Archives and Tourism is pleased to announce the recent donation of additional historical and genealogical materials given to the Archives this month by Mary F. Carter of Kingsport, Tennessee. The donation includes family histories, Bible records, books, photographs, school records, church records, obituaries and more. The items are currently in processing by staff and volunteers and will be added to the already established Mary F. Carter Manuscript Collection 0087 currently housed at the Archives.

Due to the fact that many Sullivan County records were burned during the Battle of Blountville in 1863, donations to our Manuscript Collections are extremely helpful in filling in the gaps in the absence of those records that were lost.

Ms. Carter is a noted historian and genealogist who resides in Kingsport with her husband Dale, author/compiler of the W. Dale Carter Land Database and several other manuscripts also housed at the Sullivan County Archives.

For those who wish to contribute to the collection, the Sullivan County Archives accepts books, photographs, family histories, manuscripts and many other items that preserve the rich cultural history and genealogy of the region. If you have something of this nature you would like to donate, please visit us at 3425 Hwy. 126, Suite 100, adjacent to the Historic Sullivan County Courthouse in downtown Blountville.  For further information, or to become a member of our exciting volunteer team, please call 423.323.4660.
