The Michelangelo Bionic Arm at Ortho Pro

Ortho Pro Associates, Otto Bock and several local PT's attended the Michelangelo Bionic Hand demonstration as one of our very own patients tried this incredible technology.

Few parts of the human body are as important and complex as our hands. Thanks to four movable fingers and a thumb that can be separately positioned, the Michelangelo® Hand offers innovative, never-before-seen gripping kinematics giving those with upper extremity limb loss new degrees of freedom and restoring numerous hand functions for the user.

In order to achieve a natural movement pattern, the hand is equipped with two drive units. The main drive is responsible for gripping movements and gripping strength while the thumb drive allows the thumb to be electronically positioned in one additional axis of movement. Actively driven components are the thumb, index finger and middle finger. The ring finger and little finger passively follow the movements. This versatile functionality offers seven different gripping options. The new technology also has a "neutral mode" for resting the hand in a natural position, and a repositionable wrist joint offers a more natural shape and movement. The Michelangelo Hand uses advanced software that increases the responsiveness and predictability of the hand, making it much easier to operate.

High School Sports a Civil Right for Students with Disabilities?
(From the Amputee Coalition)

January 25, 2013: Today, for the first time, the Department of Education issued new guidance for schools nationwide that makes sports a civil right for students with disabilities.  The new guidance says that students with disabilities must be given a fair chance to play on traditional sports teams within the school system, or have their own leagues.

This is a huge step forward for children living with disabilities, including amputees.  The guidance does not guarantee a spot on a competitive team, but it does require that students with disabilities not be excluded from participation because of their disability.

As long as reasonable accommodations can be made for students with disabilities to participate, then those accommodations must be made.  In an instance where the accommodations would "fundamentally alter" the game, or create an unfair advantage, federal officials said that schools will be obligated to create separate  but equally supported opportunities for kids with disabilities to participate (ex: wheelchair basketball, sled hockey, etc).
