A couple of days ago, we thought we would be sharing a run of the mill "Merry Christmas" eNews with you. But then Ava joined the GALT family and stole our hearts. Ava wants to share with you her story of coming to GALT just in time for her to have Merry Christmas.
On December 19, the Amarillo-Panhandle Humane Society ("APHS") contacted GALT about an older tattooed female greyhound, named Ava, surrendered by her owner. APHS explained that Ava's owner gave her up because Ava was "old and pooped in the house." Turns out, Ava is 11.5 year old RJ's Cubs born June 23, 2004.
GALT immediately rescued this precious fawn lady, dispatching a volunteer to APHS to pick her up. Ava was so weak, confused and frightened that she could not even walk out of APHS unassisted. The APHS angels carried her to our volunteer's SUV and helped her on board. Ava said "goodbye" and "thank you" with sweet greyhound kisses and went off to see Dr. Harrison at the Animal Medical Center in Amarillo. Dr. Harrison gave Ava some subQ fluids to help relieve her dehydration and treated a large, infected wound on her right hind leg. We still need to learn a lot about Ava's medical condition and she will be undergoing further evaluation soon.
After visiting Dr. Harrison, Ava went home with an incredible GALT foster family where she is resting comfortably. She happily ate up a wonderful meal with her foster pack and settled in for a nap. We hope she will rally in the warmth and safety of a GALT foster home. Indeed, in her foster home environment, Ava is a perfect pooper and asks to go outside when it is time.
It just goes to show, one person's trash is another person's treasure. Ava is GALT's treasure now and will have a much merrier Christmas as a GALT foster! Stay tuned for more news on her progress and recovery.
And thank you to all our supporters who make the rescue of dogs like Ava possible. Whether you help spread the word about GALT in publications like My Sweet Charity or make financial contributions, we appreciate the help. If you haven't already, please consider signing up for a GALT 2016 Membership!
Merry Christmas from Ava and all of us at GALT!

GREYTSTORE HOLIDAY CHARITY SHOPPE - THANK YOU!
The GreytStore Holiday Charity Shoppe offered greyt holiday shopping solutions in Dallas on November 21, 22, 27, 28, 29 and December 5, 2015! In addition to new GreytStore items and special sales, the Shoppe offered wonderful vintage Hermes designer scarves and featured in-person looks at the pink greyhound Hermes scarf that was available through GALT's on-line auction.
GALT's Santas, aka Vern and Patrick, took requests for presents from the hounds while John Hudson Photography snapped adorable photos! Santa also honored GALT by personally drawing the winner's name for the six Dallas Cowboys Thanksgiving day game tickets (with amenities). Steve Taggert was the lucky winner this year! If all that wasn't enough, the Shoppe hosted a raffle all its own that included 18 wonderful prizes such as a gorgeous, bold Cartier leopard scarf, vintage circa 1981.
On December 5th, the Shoppe welcomed partiers as well as shoppers in the afternoon at the GALT Christmas Party. Hounds and humans enjoyed refreshments and found out who won each of the raffles! A wonderful time was had by all. Thanks to everyone who stopped by this year. And very special thanks to the many volunteers who made the Shoppe possible, to GALT's Santa Vern and Santa Patrick and to John Hudson! Click here to see more photos!
