November 13, 2015

Dear ,

Luke.
November is National Adopt a Senior Dog Month! Although adopters of seniors might have fewer years to make forever memories, giving a senior hound a home when needed most holds great rewards. Hounds improve with age. Seniors can be the sweetest, most appreciative family members you will ever have. Seniors also often come with amazing back stories and real life experiences that make them unique. Many lived in homes and already know the ropes. Others have spent a lot of time on their own as strays. One thing they all have in common is a need for a forever home at a point in life when forever homes are hard to find. If you're planning to adopt, please take a moment to consider GALT's available seniors:

Luke, aka C Ya War Chief, is a handsome 10-year-old white and brindle male. His sire is Kiowa Sweet Trey and his dam is Fuzzys Apache. Luke never raced and came to GALT from another adoption group. Luke lived in an adoptive home for 3 years, until his owner passed away. He is a big, sweet, very affectionate boy with fabulous house manners. He can be an only dog, but gets along with other
Lyndon.
big dogs fine. Luke has corns and Chronic Ulcerative Paradental Stomatitis (CUPS), which is a disease caused from a hypersensitivity to bacteria contained within the plaque which coats the teeth.

Lyndon, aka Seegold Lyndon, is a 10-year-old blue female. Her sire is Barry Lyndon and her dam is Gable Frazier. Lyndon has no races on record but had four litters! After all that motherhood, she can still cut loose and play with her foster siblings. Watch her go here.

Breeze.
Breeze, aka Turbo Breeze, is a 8 1/2 year-old brindle female. Her sire is Kiowa Sweet Trey and her dam is Turbo Wind Burn. Breeze raced 29 times, mostly in Palm Beach. After racing, she whelped two litters with sires Lonesome Cry and Dragon Fire. Breeze spent some time in a home but returned to GALT due to a change in family circumstances.

Gezabel, aka Kiowa Classmate, is an 8-year-old brindle female. Her sire is Kiowa Sweet Trey, and her dam is Kay Quin Quantas. She only raced 10 times in Florida. Gezabel is one of 9 greyhounds GALT rescued from a Fort Worth
Gezebel.
Animal Control cruelty case. Just like the other rescued dogs, she tested positive to several tick borne diseases and carried a huge load of intestinal parasites. She successfully completed treatment and is now a big tail wagger. Gezabel is a voracious eater and a quick study too, conquering the doggie door right away. She will do best with a family where someone is home during the day or where she has access to a dog door. Gezabel lived in a home for almost a year, but returned to GALT due to aggressive behavior towards a small dog.

Ruby.
Ruby, aka BD's Havana, is a 9-year-old red fawn female. Her sire is Dodgem By Design and her dam is BD's Ginger. She raced only six times. We think she then suffered a career ending injury as she limps on her right rear leg. Ruby went on to whelp several litters of puppies, and 30 of her puppies are currently registered.
Tessa.

Tessa is an 8-year-old brindle female. She came to GALT as a stray from Tulia. We can't read her tattoos so her racing career will likely remain a mystery. She has an old fracture to ankle and limps a little. She also has a heart murmur and is a heart worm survivor. She might have some miles on her but she has a lot of love to give!

Most vets consider dogs over seven to be seniors. In greyhound years, seven is just middle aged. If a younger senior is more your speed, please consider our seven year olds, Dalton, Duke, or Money. To adopt any of GALT's seniors, fill out our on-line application today!
PHOTO OF THE WEEK

This week's photo pick is an amazing shot of Steven Yeun, taken by one of our thoughtful volunteers! Steven Yeun plays Glenn Rhee in the popular zombie series "The Walking Dead." Fans are not sure whether poor Glenn is now walking dead or soon to re-emerge in a plot twist. Either way, we appreciate him posing with an "Adopt A Retired Greyhound" sign. On GALT's Facebook page, this photo reached over 48,000 people and received 2,905 likes, comments and shares. That's a huge contribution to greyhound adoption awareness. If you have a photo to share, please email it to socialmedia@galtx.org.
