You probably hear us call some hounds our "Injured Reserve" or "IR." These hounds need some rehabilitation and TLC related to injury or illness before they find their forever homes. We refer to them as our Injured Reserve in honor of the professional athletes who helped GALT get its start and continue to support our mission. GALT has recently welcomed six hounds to Injured Reserve and we want to introduce them to you.
Boone is a red fawn boy who is about 2 years old. Fort Worth Animal Care and Control found Boone as a severely underweight stray. Boone tested positive for Ehrlichia Canis. His first round of treatment will wrap up around December 1 at which time he will be rested to see if he needs further treatment.
Dani, aka Springwater Dani, is a black female born January 18, 2013. Her sire is TK Quick Strike and her dam is Springwateranton. Dani raced 70 times at Gulf Greyhound Park before a fractured right rear leg ended her career. Her injury is complicated requiring surgery to stabilize the broken bones. She will need lots of quiet time and an external fixator to hold all in place for about 8 to 10 weeks. We will check her progress with a follow up x-ray around December 16.
Dini, aka RF Houdini, is a brindle female born on April 23, 2012. Her sire is Oshkosh Slammer, and her dam is Superior Decca. Dini raced 94 times at Gulf Greyhound Park and placed about half of the time! On October 8, she broke her left rear leg ending her career. Dini recently had surgery on her leg to place a plate and screws stabilizing the break. She will have her bandage changed weekly and will have follow up x-rays mid-December. She will get a lot of quiet time until she is better.
Fleet, aka BC Fleet Street, is a black male born September 18, 2013. His sire is TK Quick Strike and his dam is BC Sweet Bell. Fleet raced 18 races at Gulf Greyhound Park before experiencing a stopper bone (small bone in the wrist) injury. He doesn't need surgery but will need to be kept quiet and leash walked for about 4 weeks. He will have a follow up x-ray in a few weeks to check his progress.
Sedona came to GALT as a stray from Itasca. We estimate that she is about 1 1/2 years old. Sedona came to us severely underweight at only 38 pounds and with a chronic fracture of her left wrist. She had surgery on her wrist on October 22 and gets her bandage changed weekly. We will check her progress mid-December with a follow up x-ray. Until then, she gets quiet time!
Willie is a small black and white male born October 2013. His tattoo says he is the "L" pup, but we can't read his registration number. Willie came to the Humane Society of North Texas as a stray. He tested positive for heartworm and was severely underweight at 44
pounds. Willie currently has a severe upper respiratory infection and is under veterinary care. As soon as he is well enough, he will start his heartworm treatment. He has already gained 4 pounds! When these pups sufficiently recover, GALT will test them for their compatibility in homes with small dogs and cats. They will join the Meet and Greet circuit and be available for adoption! Watch GALT's social media for updates on their status. Meanwhile, GALT's Miss Mesa Fund pays the considerable expense for the medical care these hounds, and our other IR hounds require. If you would like to contribute to the fund to help an IR hound, click the button today!
When our Injured Reserve hounds are well enough to leave the hospital, they all live with loving foster families. The Injured Reserve foster parents make the rehabilitation of these special pups possible and we are sincerely grateful for their contribution. One of our most limited resources continues to be space in foster homes especially for the more challenging Injured Reserve hounds. If you think you would like to give fostering a try, click here to read more. You can start small by being a vacation foster for a healthy pup and work your way up to the IR foster team! Fill out an online application to get started today!
We welcome new Injured Reserve hounds regularly. Watch for news about our most recent Injured Reserve arrival Vera. We'll introduce her as soon as we have more information.

Last week, we held a Hound Halloween costume contest on Facebook. The three photos with the most likes won prizes from the GreytStore! Bones won first prize as a Star Wars At At. Byng won second prize as I Dream of Byng. And Serafina won third prize as Stinkafina, just edging her brother Cricket out by one vote. To see all of the entries in our Facebook album, click here. If you have a hound photo you would like to share in GALT's social media, please email it to socialmedia@galtx.org.
