Week of August 3, 2015

Dear ,

Trooper.

A Tarrant County Sheriff Deputy recently found a stray fawn male and took him to the Humane Society of North Texas.  The Humane Society called him Trooper in recognition of the Deputy's role in getting Trooper to safety.  Poor Trooper was emaciated and presented with a severe skin infection.  The Humane Society got him a flea and tick treatment and vaccinations.  Then, on Thursday, July 30th, the Humane Society contacted GALT.  GALT arranged to pick Trooper up on the following Monday, when he was available for release.  But Trooper's health suddenly took a serious turn for the worse.  By Sunday, he could not even lift his head.  The Humane Society's vet suspected an advance case of tick borne disease, with organ failure, and recommended euthanasia.  When the Humane Society shared the sad news with GALT, we pleaded for just a little more time for Trooper to rally.  We didn't know what would happen as weekend communications with the Humane Society were intermittent.

Trooper.

But Monday morning came with a miracle!  Trooper got up to eat and wagged his tail!  With this amazing improvement, the Humane Society cleared him to be released to GALT. He is now in GALT's care, undergoing further medical evaluation and getting lots of TLC.  We suspect that, in his weak condition, the vaccines and flea/tick medications were a bit too much for his body to handle, resulting in his severe set back.

Trooper.

Trooper's right ear tattoo reads 91E, meaning he was born in September 2011.  His left ear is double tattooed and may never prove to be legible. Trooper tested positive for Ehrlichia Canis at a high titer but thankfully, negative for heartworm.  Poor Trooper is anemic and weighs only 65 pounds.  His blood work indicates that he might have some additional issues requiring further investigation.  His skin condition appears to be a yeast infection.  Trooper has already started treatment with Doxycycline and is getting medicated shampoo baths frequently.  We will continue to medically evaluate him and get him the care he needs.

Our little Trooper has the entire GALT team behind him now, and we hope he will make a full recovery.  If you would like to join Team Trooper by making a contribution to cover his medical costs, please click here.  He will also need a very special foster home to get him strong.  Stay tuned for more on this precious little boy's progress.  Thanks to everyone on Team Trooper who has helped get him this far!

PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Each week, space permitting, we hope to bring you our pick of the great hound photos shared on GALT's social media.  This week we have selected this little sad faced pup.  Bunnies are scary, even for greyhounds.  They carry parasites and diseases and have teeth that never stop growing.  Their big back feet kick like they are possessed.  Some of them are literally giant.  They sometimes even  try to infiltrate the pack by pretending to be dogs.  And on top of it all, they hop as a normal mode of locomotion.  Stay safe from the bunnies, everyone!

IT'S "ROCK TO THE RESCUE" - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Styx's charity, Rock the Rescue, selected GALT to be the beneficiary for their upcoming Dallas concert. The concert is on Friday, August 21st at GEXA Energy Pavilion in Dallas. In addition to Styx, Def Leppard and Tesla will be performing!  GALT needs several volunteers to sell raffle tickets for a guitar autographed by Styx!  We will also need help managing the GALT info table.

Volunteers get FREE standing room access to the concert!  (Sorry, parking not included.)  Volunteers need to have a cohesive look though - so please plan to purchase the official GALT volunteer t-shirt prior to the event. This shirt will be the on-going "uniform" for all upcoming events of this type and is available in the Greyt StoreUse coupon code "Alliance" to save $5!
