Dear (Contact First Name),
Summers are typically a busy time for GALT. This summer is no exception. A couple of weeks ago, we brought you Delly's rescue story. We are pleased to report that she has already gained 7.7 pounds. The opacity and edema in both her eyes has mostly resolved and her gums are pinking up. Her x-rays reveal an old fracture to her left hip joint. Our vets will look at this injury further when she is in better health.
Since Delly's arrival, GALT has welcomed nine additional hounds. Sally and Jenny joined us from the track last week. Jenny suffered a career ending injury in her final race. Dr. Robert Barstad of Dallas Veterinary Surgery Center evaluated her x-rays and CT scan which reflect a fracture to her sinus area. The fractured bone appears to have a good blood supply with no indication of trauma to her nasal passages. Although we initially expected Jenny to require surgery, Dr. Barstad now feels that Jenny will heal with restricted activity over the next 8 to 10 weeks. He will review additional X-rays around October 1st to check her progress.
Additionally, four hounds joined us this week from the Humane Society of Tulsa, Oklahoma. You might have seen the headlines about this cruelty seizure. Although initial reports said the Humane Society seized 24 greyhounds, the dogs turned out to be a mix of a few greyhounds, greyhound mixes, deerhound mixes and other large breeds. They were no less in need of rescuing though as the Humane Society described their living conditions as among the worst they had seen. A concerned neighbor tipped off authorities who found many deceased dogs along with the 24 survivors at a single residence in Grant County. The dogs had no access to clean water or food and were emaciated.
As the story broke, our followers let us know through social media. We promptly contacted the Humane Society and local greyhound groups to see how we could help. GALT originally asked to take custody of the nine dogs that appeared to be greyhound, greyhound mixes or deerhound mixes. However, thanks to the outpouring of support, only four of these dogs remained available. Volunteers helped transport these four (now known as Bowie, Crockett, Houston, and Travis) to the DFW area where they got baths and vet check ups. Bowie, Houston and Travis are all about 25 pounds underweight and will get two extra feedings a day for a while. Travis, about two years old, wagged so much upon his arrival at GALT's vet that he now has a bit of happy tail. Crockett's weight is about right and we are in the process of determining his genetic background. He is about 4 years old.
The next day, GALT welcomed two retired racers, Clancy and Griffen from Halfway Home Greyhound Adoption. Both are young boys racing to their forever homes. Angelo, a non-tattooed three year old male greyhound, joined the transport. Angelo is so very shy for now.
GALT has a lot of work to do to get these nine hounds all
healthy and to forever homes. Are you interested in helping? You can fill out an adoption application on-line or learn more about fostering here. Please also consider making a monetary donation on-line or by mailing a check to: Greyhound Adoption League of Texas, Inc., 3400 Carlisle St., #310, Dallas, TX 75204-1265. This is an excellent time to take the next step. Thanks to you all for your continued support! |
