Greetings!
Delly, aka Coach Delly, joined the GALT family on Saturday, July 11, 2015. She was born April 11, 2012, making her only three years old. Her sire is Flying Penske and her dam is Coach Hogan. Delly has no races on record. According to her owner of record, she was on a farm in Oklahoma and he thought they had adopted her out.
We don't know any more about Delly's journey until someone found her laying in a front yard in Fort Worth. A kind soul thankfully called the Fort Worth Animal Care and Control (FWACC) who came to her rescue. Delly could reluctantly stand, but was then too weak to walk on her own. FWACC carried her to the shelter and promptly called GALT. We immediately took her for evaluation by Drs. Soileau and Ellis at VCA Preston Park Animal Hospital. Delly was very underweight at just 46 pounds. Her eyes are clouded and her left rear leg is withered and lame. She is heartworm negative, but positive for the tick-borne disease Ehrlichia Canis. She is also carrying a heavy load of intestinal parasites. Our vets started her on treatment immediately and will continue to evaluate her eyes and leg.
On Saturday, a volunteer gave Delly a gentle bath in preparation for her transfer to a TLC foster home. Delly was covered in flea dirt but such a trusting sweetheart. When our volunteer carried her to her new foster dad's car, Delly was light as a feather and a bit nervous. Now in her foster home, Delly is resting comfortably, eating well, and already becoming a happy girl. To help her put weight on, she gets at least three squares a day. She is, and might always be, food protective, so she is fed separate from her foster fur friends. When her foster parents are away, she is rests in an ex pen. When they are home, she explores her surroundings and picks her own napping place, sometimes outside in the sun. Her foster parents report that she is very friendly with her greyhound siblings, already uses the dog door, and is cat tolerant! She still has a little trouble getting up, but can walk well and move quickly (especially when food is involved). And best of all, she is giving kisses!
Delly went back for a recheck at the vet on Wednesday. Her eyes are looking much better as the cloudiness is dissipating. She has gained 2.5 pounds already! GALT's vets are still evaluating x-rays of her lame leg but it appears she fractured her hip somewhere along the way. Dr. Soileau will see her again next week for another check up. Stay tuned for updates as this little girl blossoms into a happy hound.
If you would like to help with Delly's medical expenses, this is a great time. GALT's 2015 Summer Challenge Grant lasts all month. Up to $10,000 of July 2015 donations will be matched by an anonymous supporting foundation! Here's the link:

Space permitting, we plan to share with you our pick of the best photos from the week in social media. This week, we selected a heartwarming picture of Galen with his new forever family. Galen is 10 1/2 years old and was recently surrendered to GALT due to his prior family's financial troubles. This boy has been around, racing 160 races and serving time as a blood donor in California before spending several years in his first home. His new family knew immediately that Galen was right for them, and we are grateful they opened their hearts to him. Seniors make the best forever friends!
