The new year is flying by like a 45 mph couch potato! April is here already and it is National Adopt a Greyhound Month! That's right - it has it's own month. Please help us celebrate by sharing GALT's Facebook posts or retweeting to spread the word.
GALT's volunteers worked hard for the hounds during 2015's first quarter placing 49 hounds in forever homes and taking in 28 new hounds. Of these 28, 7 were relinquished by their owners, 15 came from breeders, kennels or farms, 5 came in as strays and one came from a shelter.
During the quarter, 19 hounds received GALT's Injured Reserve treatment for tick-borne diseases, heartworm or various other issues such as arthritis and broken legs. The cost to rehabilitate these dogs can be expensive. For example,
heartworm treatment costs on the average $2,800 per dog. Tick borne disease treatments average $1,500 per dog. And a broken leg averages over $3,000. If you would like to assist with these costs, please make a donation to the Miss Mesa Fund on our website. Placing all these dogs in loving forever homes wouldn't be possible without the continued support of people like you! Thank you!
Foster home space is our tightest resource. If you've considered fostering a hound until the right forever home comes along, take the next step today! GALT has an on-line application on its website. Fostering is no joke. It's a tough job. But watching your foster blossom into an adoptable hound and then find his forever family is a sweet reward! And remember, if you adopt, you can save one. If you foster, you can save many. |
Shelby Turns 16! Happy Birthday!
Shelby turns 16 years old on April 3, 2015! Shelby's dad says: "I fostered many but she immediately found a way into my heart. Shelby continues to bring our family and so many others greyt joy!"
The SPCA originally impounded Shelby as a stray in April of 2006. Shelby was adopted within a week but, two months later, she was found advertised on Craig's List under "spring cleaning ... free to home." Fortunately, her story has a happy ending. GALT placed her in a foster home that became her forever home where she has lived a long and happy life! Happy birthday, sweet girl!! |

HONORED HOUND OF THE WEEK - PERRY
"Perry, aka Lidia Paranoid came to us from GALT in June of 2004 at almost 4 years old after they received him from the track with a torn Achilles. After his surgery and rehab and after Susie delivered him to us I remember thinking, wow, this is a big dog and what was I thinking. He quickly worked his way into our hearts. He was so gentle, never barked except wh en it thundered and was a constant by my side. When we went somewhere people were in awe of his size and his grace. He was truly a gentle giant. He lived with my parrots, never once giving them a second thought. As the years went by, his black muzzle turned white as they do and Perry was diagnosed with the dreaded osteo. Making that decision to let him go was by far one of the hardest things I've endured. We had him for 8 years. I still miss him every day. Thank you GALT for all that you do."
