So many things make retired racers special, including the amount of information available to adopters about their hound's family tree and racing career.  Finding this information is all about the ear tattoos.  Here's what they mean:

A greyhound's right ear tattoo represents the month, year, and order in which the dog was tattooed.  The first one or two numbers indicate the month of birth.  The number right before the letter is the last digit in the year of birth.  And the letter represents the order in which the litter was tattooed.  Some say that the letter represents the order of birth, but that's usually not the case.

A greyhound's left ear tattoo is a five digit number assigned to the litter at birth.  All pups in a litter have the same number.  You can use this number to determine if your pup's look-a-likes really are littermates.

For example, Slate's ear tattoos above are 110B-55000.  The "11" means he was born in November.  The "0" means he was born in 2010.  And the "B" means he was the second of the litter to be tattooed.  His litter's number is 55000.

Using the ear tattoos, you can look your pup up in the National Greyhound Association's (NGA) database to access extensive details including its racing name, generations of breeding information, and racing statistics.  You might even find pictures of some of your dog's ancestors.  Below you see Slate's family tree and his racing name, Slatex Corpus.

If an ear inspection isn't realistic and you already know your dog's racing name, you can find its ear tattoos by googling the dog's
One eared Marley.
racing name in quotes followed by the word greyhound.  For example, google search "'Bad Boy Prince' greyhound" to retrieve the racing record of retired racer Bad Boy Prince.  Your first search result will likely be from www.trackinfo.com.  Click on it to retrieve information such as that shown below.  You can then use the ear tattoos listed to explore the data available in the NGA database.

Keep in mind that Irish, English, Australian breeders use different conventions which often include a code letter for the year of birth.  Show greyhounds registered with the American Kennel Club are not tattooed at all.  Lurchers and greyhounds bred outside the racing industry typically are also not tattooed.

We hope you enjoy learning all about your hound's history.  You never know.  Sometimes biological family relationships are unexpectedly discovered in adoptive families!
