Tessa's Tiny Head.
Greyhounds have tiny heads.  It's true.  Because their heads are so tiny, they can slip right out of a standard buckle collar leading to unplanned and dangerous adventures.  To prevent these escapes, GALT recommends using a martingale collar specially designed for the sighthound head.

A martingale collar usually consists of two loops of cloth material connected by two metal rings.  The leash attaches to a D-ring on the top of the smaller loop.  When a hound tries to back out of the martingale collar, the collar tightens around the neck.  When properly sized, the martingale collar will tighten enough to prevent the hound's head from slipping out but not so much that the hound is choked.  The wider the material, the gentler it will be on your hound's neck.

To properly size a martingale collar for your  greyhound, wake him up and get him standing.  Then position the collar up behind the ears where it would rest if the dog were trying to pull out of it. Pull up on the D-ring to tighten the collar.  Make sure the two metal rings holding the two loops together do not touch.  If they do, the collar is too big and could slip off.  The collar should have about two inches between the two metal rings, or room for about 3 fingers.  Now relax the collar so it slides back down the neck.  Properly fitted, it should rest around the middle of the neck.  It might take several tries to find the sweet spot on your martingale for your dog.

Remember to attach your dog's identification tags to some part of the collar other than the D-ring.  Attaching anything to the D-ring other than a leash controlled by a human increases the choking risk to the dog.  Therefore, some greyhound parents prefer to keep the identification tags attached to a simple buckle or break away collar worn with an additional martingale for walks.

Martingale collars are sold widely in numerous beautiful designs on the internet including in the GALT Greyt Store

"Wine Down the Winter" Yappy Hour - March 22nd

Say hello to Spring with a wine tasting at Kent and Company! This dog friendly event allows you to enjoy two glasses of wine or craft beer from a predetermined menu which also includes a personal artisan cheese board while supporting the GALT greys. This is not a formal tasting, so stop in anytime between 3-7pm. Additional glasses are available for purchase, or, if you decide a bottle is in order (either to go or to be consumed on premises) Kent and Co. will donate 10% of that purchase to GALT. Make additional donations and try and win a prize at the same time by buying a plastic Easter egg. Open the egg to see if you've won a Bissell Power fresh hard floor cleaner, Dolce Gambino calendar, Gourmet Olive Oil basket, Bottle of Wine, Logan's Secret autographed book, Spa gift certificate and more. Eggs are $5 each and you can buy as many as you like. Each dog in attendance will receive a custom Kent and Company bandana (and may appear on the K & C Facebook page).

HONORED HOUND OF THE WEEK - TIGER

In 2007, Tiger went to his forever home in San Diego. He is the confident, independent type perfect for life as an only dog and that's what his parents intended. But, within a year, Tiger worked his greyhound wiles and got himself a greyhound big brother. Shortly thereafter he fanagled a little sister. And then the little sister's brother from the same litter came to live with him. Tiger has been the gentle boss of them all and a devoted ambassadog for his breed. He is now 11.5 years old.
IRISH FESTIVAL RECAP

Irish Festival for 2015 was a huge success! GALT again was located in the Centennial Building within the Cultural area. This year's decorations were updated with many thanks to Melissa Paar and Julia Dietsch! GALT won 3rd Prize for Best Cultural Display for 2015. This is a total of four awards for Best Cultural Display by GALT over the last 12 years:  2003 - 2nd place; 2009 - 3rd place; 2011 - 2nd place; and 2015 - 3rd place!

Sincere thanks also to the many, many volunteers who stepped up to talk to the public about the joys of greyhound adoption and ownership.

The hounds seem to really enjoy the attention and they are such greyt ambassadogs!

Everyone is looking forward to 2016 for sure.-Be sure to join us for this annual favorite!
