Is your dog protected from dog flu?  Before your next trip to the dog park, read on and consider a flu shot for your hound.

Dog flu is a real thing.  Similar to human flu, dog flu is a contagious respiratory disease caused by Type A H3N8 influenza virus.  According to the Center for Disease Control, dog flu originated as an equine influenza virus and jumped species from horse to dog.  The canine version first appeared 2004, when greyhounds in track kennels came down with an unknown respiratory illness.  Scientists determined that the horse virus had adapted to spread among dogs housed in kennels and shelters.

Dogs with the flu often have a cough, runny nose and fever.  Fortunately, dog flu is rarely fatal but some cases can be severe and include pneumonia.  Dog flu can be spread between dogs by contact with respiratory secretions or with contaminated objects.  In other  words, dog flu is spread between dogs the same way human flu is spread between humans.  If a dog has symptoms, proper disinfection and limiting contact with other dogs is key to prevent the dog from spreading the virus.  There are, however, no known cases of dog flu spreading from dog to human.

If you suspect your pup has the flu, talk to your vet about a flu test.  If your vet confirms the flu, treatment typically consists of supportive care sometimes including medication to make your dog more comfortable.  If your dog's flu is accompanied by a secondary bacterial infection, your vet might also prescribe a broad spectrum antibiotic.  As with humans, hydration is also important.

I'm vaccinated!

(Marian)

Remember that dog flu can be prevented with proper vaccination.  And, if you adopt from GALT, this vaccination is included in your hounds pre-adoption medical care.  If your dog has not already been vaccinated, talk to your vet about a doggie flu shot today!

HONORED HOUND OF THE WEEK - SLATE

Slate, GALT's Corpus, loving companion/household imp of Chris & Rita Wulke, is one of three siblings who came to GALT from Gulf Greyhound Park when their racing careers were over. Slate was officially adopted at the 2014 GALT Birthday Bash and endured a cross-country ride to his forever home the next day. He brought new energy to his 9 year old housemate who had lost her roomie the year before. Slate put a spring in her step and re-energized her appetite. He brings smiles to our faces every day and is very creative - learning to open cabinet doors, loving on everything (a bit too much) that belongs to his dad and more. We can't imagine life without him!
