GALT has several special funds to help greyhounds in different ways. One of our cornerstone funds is the Miss Mesa Fund which assists greyhounds with special medical needs.
Miss Mesa, aka Mesa Red Babe, joined the GALT family on October 14, 2001, just months short of her seventh birthday. She
had only known life on the
greyhound farm as a brood mom.
Early on, everyone knew she was special - a truly beautiful girl inside and out. Cindy and Ron Nichols fostered Mesa, and within a few weeks they knew they wanted her to join their family forever. On November 10, 2001, the Nichols family, including Cobbler, a 3-year-old male greyhound and Sam the cat, adopted her. She settled right in and enjoyed the life she so richly deserved.
Occasionally though, Mesa would limp. Although everyone hoped it was just a sprain, eventually her vet diagnosed her with osteosarcoma. Mesa crossed the Rainbow Bridge on February 1, 2002, just a few weeks after her seventh birthday. Miss Mesa spent only three months in her forever home - three months in human time, but to her it was almost two canine years... the best two years of her all-too-short life. She was the first GALT greyhound to cross the Rainbow Bridge.
In Mesa's memory, Cindy and Ron generously made a contribution to GALT to start the Miss Mesa Fund.
Contributions to this fund are used to pay for GALT's single largest program expense - our hounds' medical care.
We call these hounds our "Injured Reserve." Some of the common conditions they might be recovering from include broken legs (average cost of $3,550 per dog), tick-borne diseases (average cost of $1,500 per dog), heartworm (average cost of $2,800 per dog), or flesh wounds.
Arrow, a young male found as a stray, is just one example of the special injured reserve greyhounds benefiting from the Miss Mesa Fund. He is currently undergoing treatment for heartworm and is tolerating the treatment well. You can learn about GALT's other Injured Reserve hounds on our website.
Please Help the Injured Reserve hounds by making a tax deductible donation to the Miss Mesa Fund online today or by sending a check to 3400 Carlisle Street, Suite #310, Dallas, TX 75204-1265. Thank you for helping these special hounds!
