What did you say? The IR and the TC and the who? Yes, it can be confusing. So let's sort it out. GALT groups the hounds in its care into three main categories (Available, Training Camp, and Injured Reserve) to denote their availability status for potential adopters. GALT's website allows you to look at each group separately from a drop down menu as shown to the right.
Here is a little more information about what the designations mean:
Available: GALT's Available greyhounds live in foster homes within the DFW metroplex and often attend Meet the Greyhounds events on the weekends. One you receive approval of your adoption application, you can meet Available greyhounds by appointment. All of GALT's Available greyhounds have spent some time in a foster home learning the ropes.
Training Camp: Almost all incoming GALT hounds start out in Training Camp (TC). GALT's Training Camp greyhounds are awaiting medical treatment (such as spay or neuter) and/or are in boarding until a foster home becomes available. Sometimes a greyhound that is extra-shy or that was a stray for a while will need some extra socialization time in their foster home before being ready for adoption. These hounds are also in Training Camp. Training Camp hounds are not yet available for applications or meeting appointments but may on occasion attend a Meet the Greyhounds event if they have completed their medical processing and are just waiting for a foster home. Greyhounds graduate from Training Camp to Available based on the Foster Coordinator's evaluation.
Injured Reserve: GALT's Injured Reserve (IR) greyhounds need extra time to rehabilitate from an injury or illness. They spend this time in foster homes in and outside of the DFW area. Some of the common conditions requiring time on Injured Reserve include broken legs, tick-borne diseases, heartworm disease or flesh wounds. Greyhounds on IR are not available for applications or appointments until they are fully recovered, ready for normal activity, have been spayed or neutered, and moved to Available based on a review by GALT's veterinary team.
