February is National Pet Dental Health Month. Your pet's dental health is not only important to its mouth, but also to its over all health including brain, heart, kidneys, liver and lungs. Remember bad breath is one of the primary indicators of a dental problem. If you're baby's breath is more malodorous than usual and it's not from snacking in a litter box, consider consulting with your veterinarian about a dental examination and cleaning.

While it is tempting and trendy to forego anesthesia for your pet's dental cleaning, please reconsider. The American Veterinary Dental College ("AVDC") takes the position that dental scaling on a pet without anesthesia is inappropriate because of the risk of pain and injury to a pet who does not understand the need to remain completely still and the limited ability to be sufficiently thorough. Read the AVDC's full position statement here.

It's also important to help your pet keep clean teeth between veterinary cleanings the same way you keep yours in shape - daily brushing. For easy, step-by-step instructions on how to teach a pet to accept a daily tooth brushing and more information about pet dental health, visit American Veterinary Medical Association's National Pet Dental Health Month page.

Good dental care can help keep your greyhound's smile full of the pearly whites!
