Even if your dog is micro-chipped, keeping identification on him at all times is critical to reuniting you and your best friend if he gets lost. Let's face it. A dog can slip out of a door or a gate when you least expect it. Wind can blow open a door or knock down a fence. Guests may not be as conscientious of door safety as you. You never know. If the unexpected happens, dogs with collars look less feral and more like they belong in a home. It is less work for people to find where the dog belongs and, therefore, they are more likely to help.
GALT issues an ID tag with our contact information on a standard Premier martingale collar to each dog when the dog comes to us. We ask every adopter to always keep this ID tag on the dog in case the dog is lost and the adopter cannot be reached. For only a few dollars, you can buy your dog a standard ID tag with your mobile phone number and address. These tags are widely available on Amazon, Ebay or at your local pet supply retailer in various styles, colors and sizes.
If you prefer your dog not to wear a martingale collar with tags in the house, there are alternatives. For example, lightweight tag collars that don't have metal rings to catch on things are a good solution. Or you can use a Boomerang collar tag that lays flat on the collar. If you don't like jingling tags, get a tag collar with the pet's name and your phone number embroidered on it. A tag bag that silences the jingle of the tags can also keep the noise down.
If you have a dog that might back out of a collar, consider using an at home collar with ID and a separate martingale collar for walks. When you walk, put a comfortable martingale for the leash attachment on in front of the tag collar. If the dog slips his martingale, he will still have his ID and you can be more easily reunited.
Also consider medical alert tags if your dog has a health problem. Most ID tag providers allow you to customize text such that you can design a medical alert tag suitable for your dog's condition as a companion to an ID tag. Medical ID tags also come ready to order for some common conditions such as diabetes.
Whatever solution you choose, remember to check every few months to make sure the ID remains secure and legible. The quickest and safest way home for your lost baby is for the humans he meets to immediately know his address and your mobile phone number.
