Last week we talked about heartworms. This week we'd like to discuss tick-borne diseases which are also preventable given monthly applications of Frontline Plus or similar products. Like heartworms, tick borne diseases like Ehrlichia or Babesia are also potentially dangerous if left untreated. It's vital for dogs to be on flea and tick preventatives year round in Texas, where like mosquitoes, the pests are active practically year round.
All GALT greyhounds are tested for tick-borne diseases when they arrive. The Protatek reference lab test includes Babesia Canis, Ehrlichia Canis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and Lyme Disease.
Babesia is treated with Imizol injections. Ehrlichia is treated with Imizol and 6 weeks of Doxycycline, an antibiotic. We retest about 3 weeks after the course of treatment, and further treatment may or may not be necessary. These are the two most common tick-borne diseases found in our greyhounds. The other diseases are also treated with antibiotics. GALT currently has five dogs in various stages of treatment for tick-borne diseases: Garnet, Ivana, Mercury, Naomi, and Prince. Please join us in thanking their foster homes for their dedication to their care. A donation for one or more of them to the Miss Mesa medical fund would be much appreciated!
