Heartworms are a preventable parasite, but they are also a potentially very damaging parasite, leading to organ damage and death if left untreated. Transmitted by mosquitoes, heartworms live in the heart and large blood vessels of the lungs once they mature. Adult heartworms can measure over 12 inches long. It's vital for dogs to be on heartworm preventatives year round in Texas, where mosquitoes are active practically year round themselves.
All GALT greyhounds are tested for heartworms when they arrive. Since we do take in strays, we tend to receive a number of dogs already infected with heartworms. Treatment consists of a drug called Immiticide, which is delivered by injection. A dog is treated once, and then a month later treated twice on consecutive days. Then there is a wait of three months before they are retested. If they are still testing positive at that point, we retest after another month. If still positive after that, they usually receive a third treatment. During this whole time span, a minimum of four months, and sometimes up to a year, they are cared for in a special medical foster home. They must be kept calm and quiet during their span of treatment. As the heartworms die, they break up and can cause blockages in major blood vessels. GALT currently has four dogs in various stages of treatment for heartworm: Arrow, Elena, Tessa, and Wick. Please join us in thanking their foster homes for their diligent care. A donation for one or more of them to the Miss Mesa medical fund would be much appreciated!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, VELCRO!
Join us in wishing Velcro a very happy 15th birthday! It's not often our hounds reach that age, so let's celebrate! He has spent 11 wonderful years in his forever home so far, and turned 15 on January 4th.
"Velcro, aka Blaze, won my heart as I visited Wags to Whiskers...a few doors down from my new business. We took him as a foster and he soon became Brian's shadow. Always loving and excited for walks and treats and extra company, he has been a joy and comfort throughout the past 11 years."
