Greetings!

CharityMeet Charity! Charity, aka DG's Afterburner, is a 11-year-old white and brindle female born January 1, 2002. Her sire is DG's True Blue, and her dam is Kelso's Pamela. There are two races to her credit at Raynham/Taunton, MA in July 2003. Charity arrived from the same source as Stetson, Onyx, Blade Cupcake, Timex, Carbon, Harry, Clooney, and Stewart. Unfortunately Charity, like the nine others, was also heartworm positive. She has been through quite a roller-coaster of treatment for various complications, but nine months later, she is finally healthy!

Charity has not yet been tested with cats or small animals.

From Charity's Foster Mom:

Guess you finally "spotted" me! Ha! Ha! Get it? Did you see that big spot on my back? (Can't say I don't have a sense of humor!) I'd like to share the glowing recommendation my foster mom has given me. First of all, I am sweet and affectionate. I like to stay close to mom just in case her hand needs to pet me. Sometimes I'll lie right behind her as she's washing dishes. Closeness is important to humans. Kids don't bother me either. They have hands for loving too. I love to get ear massages and don't mind getting baths. I never have accidents in the house. Gross! Who would ever do that??? I love to be outside and as long as it's not raining, I like to lie in the backyard just taking in the sights and sounds of nature. Mom says I'm a nature girl. For some reason I do like to take all of the toys into the backyard. Mom brings them back in. Guess she likes that game. Sometimes I like to run in the backyard with the other dogs. I even like to run with my beagle cousin. I do come when I'm called but that's about my only trick. It seems I spend all my time just being a great companion. I don't counter surf and I don't eat from the trash can. Gross again! I don't need to be crated at all but I don't mind it if mom thinks I'd be safer in it. I sleep through the night in her bedroom on those soft cushy beds she buys us. Oh! I just thought of another trick I can do. When the land line rings, just to be sure mom hears it, I roo. It gets the other dogs rooing too! It's so funny! When she finally answers it, we stop. See what a big help I am? Even though they call me a "senior" there's a lot of spunk left in these bones. Age is just a number. Why don't you come out to see me sometime?

Seniors are the best kept secret! Come meet Charity soon!

HAPPY HOUNDS, HAPPY HOMES - RICARDO

Ricardoone of GALT's galgos, wrote to us recently with this update.  "I am doing well. I've been in my forever home since the day I got off the plane from Spain. My papa says I'm a " big pain in the neck" and always have been since the day he brought me home from the airport, but my momma loves me to death. I have three sisters and two brothers with me now and two brothers and one very special sister (Sea Shell) who have gone to the Rainbow Bridge. I never knew one of my brothers at the Bridge, but they tell me he (Max) was a handsome devil. Anyway, I have plenty of soft beds to sleep in and two squares a day plus plenty of goodies. I am loved very much by my entire family, and I couldn't be happier unless of course, we win the lottery. Then papa says he would build me my own house in the backyard where momma can visit me anytime she likes. My papa is so funny. Where does he get this stuff?"  Sounds like a perfect match to us!

Ricardo

INCOMING GREYHOUNDS

Kate, aka DLT Whistle Bye, is a beautiful, almost 10-year-old brindle female, born April 8, 2003. Her sire is Craigie Whistler, making her grand sire Molotov, and her dam is Floridian, making her grand sire Black Streaker. Kate has 12 races logged for her career, starting January 1, 2005 in Corpus Christi and finishing there April 3, 2005. One glance shows Kate to have that "Molotov look" with the white throat and chest. Kate was in a home for over 7 years, but has returned to GALT due to a change in family circumstances and no fault of her own. She is cat tolerant.

Daniel is an approximately 2-year-old black greyhound/saluki mix. Daniel was surrendered to the Alvarado Animal Control by his owner after he was attacked by other dogs in the household. His wounds were horrific on his chest - this is a very graphic picture, so be aware. Daniel was placed under the care of the Alvarado Animal Control's veterinarian on March 8, and he was released to one of GALT's veterinarians, Dr. Jeff Ellis of VCA Preston Park Animal Hospital on Monday, March 11. Daniel is currently being evaluated and watched very carefully, as his wounds have been closed up with several drain tubes in place.

FOSTERING

We always need foster homes, of course, but right now we are in serious need of more foster homes willing to take in injured or ill dogs who need some extra TLC to recover. Foster dogs on IR (Injured Reserve) do not attend meet and greet events, but may need vet visits on a regular basis. So it's best if the foster lives in the north Dallas area to make those vet visits easier to schedule.

Greyhounds on IR may be on restricted activity, meaning they need to be crated a good deal or go outside only on a leash - this is true for broken legs and dogs recovering from heartworm. Others may be under evaluation or have wounds that need to heal. Others may have no restrictions, but just need a regimen of medication - this is true for dogs recovering from tick-borne diseases. A greyhound may be on IR for as little as two weeks to several months, depending on their recovery needs.

While all fostering is rewarding, there is something very special about seeing a dog recover from illness or injury. Please consider helping GALT out with this very special mission! Contact Jennifer at jennifer@vilches.org if you are interested in fostering an injured or ill greyhound.
