Greetings!

Babe

Smile! This happy girl is Babe! Babe, aka Foxy Brown Babe, is a 12½-year-old red fawn female born June 1, 2000. Her sire is Oswald Cobblepot and her dam is Frans Rudy. Babe has 30 races to her credit, all at the Raynham/Tanton track in Florida. Her career started on September 5, 2002 and ended on November 10, 2003. She has been at a greyhound breeding farm since then, but was not bred. This sweetheart just wants a soft bed, and a loving family.

Babe is cat and small dog tolerant.

From Babe's Foster Mom:

Before I start telling you about Babe, I need to look around furtively to make sure she's not listening. OK, she's asleep on the futon, so I can make this request: Please don't let her know she'll turn 13 in June. True, she has only four teeth, most of which can be seen even if her mouth is closed. And yes, she may wander into a room or outside and forget for a brief moment why she's there. But who among us doesn't do that? OK, she sleeps most of the day, but rare is the greyhound of any age who doesn't need a decent amount of shut-eye. Babe rarely (as in never) gets riled. She's easy-going. She eats heartily -- yes, even with four teeth. Though she isn't exactly clamoring for walks, at times when a foster sibling is making the block rounds, she barks a bit. But a big hug, calm voice and perhaps a soft treat tends to settle her down. What doesn't settle her down -- and who can blame her? -- is being around a youngster. When foster sis Angie goes outside, Babe is usually right behind her. Babe wags her tail and jumps a little, making no attempt to mask her mirth at being in the company of such a youthful friend. When a young male visited the house, Babe left the room she hardly ever leaves (except to go outside) and wouldn't let him out of her sight. She smiled and she flirted and that is the honest truth. Babe would do best with another dog, preferably one at least a few years her junior. She relies on Angie to remind her which direction to head to the yard, to enliven her day, to keep her company. Babe is also fine with our cats, paying them no mind. Babe is, yeah, a babe. A charming, unassuming and, when the mood strikes, frolicking kinda gal.

Seniors are the best kept secret! Come meet Babe soon!

MARCH CALENDAR BOY - DALE

Dale

Mr. March!  How fitting for Dale, aka Cry Dale, to be selected to represent the month that celebrates St. Patrick's Day - Dale is half Irish!  He was one whopping beautiful black greyhound! Off the track, he was pure muscle weighing in at 86 pounds.  His body and head were so large that people often asked me if he was a Great Dane.

Dale loved everyone and loved food more than any greyhound that I have ever known. He was the craftiest counter surfer I ever experienced!  He had a huge heart, and we had a very special bond.

Dale left me suddenly one day in June 2012 from a massive stroke - it was all so impossible. He was perfect, happy, and goofy one minute, and the next day he was gone from this earth. He will never be forgotten.

GALT would love to publish your GALT hound's story in an upcoming edition of the GALT eNews.  Please submit your story and a photo (no cell phone photos please) to Rita Wulke at rwwulke@gmail.com

FOSTERING

We always need foster homes, of course, but right now we are in serious need of more foster homes willing to take in injured or ill dogs who need some extra TLC to recover. Foster dogs on IR (Injured Reserve) do not attend meet and greet events, but may need vet visits on a regular basis. So it's best if the foster lives in the north Dallas area to make those vet visits easier to schedule.

Greyhounds on IR may be on restricted activity, meaning they need to be crated a good deal or go outside only on a leash - this is true for broken legs and dogs recovering from heartworm. Others may be under evaluation or have wounds that need to heal. Others may have no restrictions, but just need a regimen of medication - this is true for dogs recovering from tick-borne diseases. A greyhound may be on IR for as little as two weeks to several months, depending on their recovery needs.

While all fostering is rewarding, there is something very special about seeing a dog recover from illness or injury. Please consider helping GALT out with this very special mission! Contact Jennifer at jennifer@vilches.org if you are interested in fostering an injured or ill greyhound.
