| Summer Meals Celebration a success |
Despite the rainy weather, our 2013 Summer Meals Celebration at Rockwood Station Apts was a huge success! PHFO helped showcase the many positive impacts of the Summer Food Program and thanked donors of our 2013 mini-grant campaign, along with other supporters.
Rockwood's young residents enjoyed face painting, a bounce castle and a delicious cooking demonstration from Portland Chef Ingrid Chen of Kitchen Kru/Remedy.
Summer meals are important for kids who rely on school cafeterias during the school year. More than 800 free summer meal sites exist throughout the state to make sure kids can get the nutrition they need to return to school healthy and ready to learn. Even so, many people still don't know about them. The party not only celebrated the program, but us helped spread the word even further.
On the day of the event, more than 100 kids received a free, nutritious and delicious lunch. Operation Lunchbox, a KOIN TV project, provided live coverage. As a result, more families showed up after seeing us on TV.
We are very grateful for the support of many partners, and for this opportunity to give a big round of applause for everyone's hard work every year, to make sure kids are fed during the summer!
