Call to Action: Show up for SNAP!
Congress will soon take their annual summer break and the Farm Bill remains unfinished. Unfortunately, cuts to SNAP are still a threat. To some legislators the conversation is a done deal - no longer if there will be cuts to SNAP, but how much will be cut.

We can all agree this is unacceptable. What can we do? SHOW UP FOR SNAP!

When:

Members of Congress are on recess from Aug. 2nd to Sept. 3rd.

Where:

They will be scheduling Town hall meetings, ribbon cuttings, food bank tours, community meetings, and will be at their district offices. Info available on their websites.

Messages: Hunger can be Solved, SNAP feeds one in five Oregonians, SNAP is working, No cuts to SNAP!

How you can "Show Up":

  • Make signs, posters, t-shirts, and banners

  • Visit their offices, events and town hall meetings

  • Send emails, Tweet, and Facebook

  • Take pictures and post them on your Facebook. Make sure to tag your elected officials and Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon. We will re-post and re-tweet your messages.

Rose visits Coos Bay

From Rose Walker, Child Hunger Prevention Manager

"Summer is my favorite season for child Hunger prevention work.

Setting up to feed kids
in Coos Bay
Each year, we raise funds to give out as mini-grants to meal site providers and sponsors across the state. We help them feed more kids and enhance their programming.

This past week, my travels took me to the south coast where I visited the Coos Bay School District, which has been operating the Summer Meals Program for 20 years. Read more about how a mini-grant helped them fund exciting new developments at the Coos Bay School District."

We can help you recover a stolen vehicle

Now you have an extra incentive to Become a Partner - it might just save your car!

Here's what happened: Those who sign up to become a "Partner" receive a window decal to proudly display their support.

Recently, a partner had her truck stolen. A few days later, her husband spotted a black truck in a parking lot and did a double-take. What was that in the back window? A familiar blue and orange square! He quickly pulled over and called the police.

When asked how he knew for sure, he replied assertively, "I saw my Hunger-Free Oregon" sticker!

Now the sticker, truck and owner are safely back together. So sign up to Become a Partner today - you'll help prevent hunger in Oregon and you just might help solve a crime!
Spreading the news - read all about it!
Unique media partnership are helping to spread the word about programs such as SNAP and Summer meals for kids.

In 2011, KOIN TV teamed up with Safeway and PHFO to launch Operation Lunchbox, an effort to promote the Summer Meal program for kids. In the first year, PHFO's website www.SummerFoodOregon.org

saw an 81% increase in traffic. With each year, we reach more families and children.

Another great partnership is with KUNP Univision. Regular programming on Cita con Nelly has highlighted the importance of SNAP for ensuring good nutrition among families and children. Online videos and PSAs - including one being shown at "Portland Movies in the Park" - has reached even more people.

Nelly recently visited Hacienda CDC, a Latino Community Development Corporation apartment complex. Check out our Facebook album for behind-the-scenes shots of the event. Visit our website to watch other Cita Con Nelly videos.

On Thursday, August 1, KOIN will film our 2013 Summer Meals Celebration, held at Rockwood Station Apartments. Like us on Facebook to see photos and KOIN TV coverage.

Join us at the Fremont Street Fest!
Come meet us at the Fremont Street Fest this Saturday, August 4, from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. We'll be enjoying great food, live bands, family activities and community!

Somewhere between 42nd and 52nd Avenues on Fremont Street, you'll find our table full of information about ending hunger in Oregon. Stop by to say hi and learn more about how you can get involved.

Can you help? If you'd like to help us share information for a couple of hours on Saturday, please contact Simone.
