Governor Kitzhaber's Budget, 2013-2015
Governor Kitzhaber released his proposed 2013-2015 budget on Nov. 30th. Below are a few highlights.
Highlights:
  • Enhances the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) so low-income Oregonians can keep more of their wages for basic household expenses.
  • Supports more low-income working families through the Employment Related Daycare (ERDC) program, helping their wages stretch further by making chidcare more affordable.

Of concern:

  • A proposed reduction in the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program restricts lifetime benefits to 36 months (down from 60 months). This change would affect families living in deep poverty (less than 50% of the federal poverty level), putting their children at risk and affecting their ability to find and keep employment.

We will be working with the legislature and the Governor during the upcoming legislative session to protect and expand services that help all Oregonians thrive. You can help by responding to Calls to Action, and following us on Facebook and Twitter for the latest news from the capitol.

Listening Session Highlights

Food systems work is happening in Benton County!

The Oregon Hunger Task Force held a listening session at the First Presbyterian Church in Corvallis Dec. 13th.

A panel of seven local experts, including Ten Rivers Food Web, Benton County Health Department, and local housing organizations talked about what's happening to impact hunger and food security in Benton County:

  • The Bean and Grain Project is diversifying the types of foods produced in the region
  • The County's Health Improvement Plan now has a food security work group
  • Corvallis 509J School District is working hard to feed kids during the summer and after school

Stay tuned for more detailed informtion (and presentation materials) on our web site in the coming weeks.

Forum on hunger and Oregonians 50+
We joined AARP and other partners in Dec. to co-host a solutions forum, "Hidden in Plain Sight: Hunger in Oregonians 50+".

Eighty-four participants took a closer look at hunger among older Oregonians. Some of the discussion items included more outreach about SNAP and other resources, opportunities to impact public policy through SNAP and the Older Amercan's Act, and development of a new coalition that will help identify hunger among older Oregonians in healthcare settings.
