2017 Youth Conservation Corps
Allison Welborn, Youth Corps Program Manager, Virginia State Parks

Applications are open for the 2017 Virginia State Parks Youth Conservation Corps and crew leaders are accepted on a rolling basis. Submit your application today

The Virginia State Parks Youth Conservation Corps is a three-week summer work program offered for youth, ages 14-17, to give them the opportunity to see what it takes to keep a Virginia State Park running. Crewmembers are given axes, hand saws, and other tools and are expected to complete a variety of projects ranging from restoration of park habitat, construction of picnic tables and benches, etc. We are looking for positive-spirited YCC crew leaders with a sense of humor, looking to make a difference in the youth of Virginia.

Leaders are expected to provide a positive teamwork atmosphere that is supportive and conducive to learning. A week's work will include projects such as restoration and preservation of the habitats in the parks, construction of picnic tables and benches, removal of invasive species, landscaping, etc. Weeknights consist of environmental education programs as well as conservation discussions that are facilitated by the crew leaders. Leaders are responsible for planning weekend adventure activities which range from recreational activities, visits to nearby state parks, museums, and other local attractions.

Ideal candidates will display a problem-solving ethic; flexibility during trying times; and a strong dedication to make a positive impact on the lives of the youth. Leaders must be entering their junior year of college or equivalent post-secondary education/experience in fall 2017. Leaders must have a valid driver's license and be willing to drive a 15-passenger van. A full list of job duties and qualifications can be found ONLINE.

If you've read this far, I take it you're interested in this amazing opportunity! If making a difference in the youth of today wasn't enough, read on to learn the rest of the benefits offered to the YCC crew leaders. Meals, lodging, and transportation will be provided upon arrival at your park assignment. After the successful completion of a session, leaders earn a $1,800 stipend (+$350 to cover travel costs to and from training and your park assignment). Crew leaders may be eligible to serve up to two sessions, earning the stipend at the end of each session. Leaders must attend the mandatory training session from Sunday, June 18 through Wednesday, June 21. At training, leaders will get First Aid certification through the American Red Cross Association.

2017 Session Dates:
First Session: Thursday, June 22 through Saturday, July 15
Second Session: Thursday, July 20 through Saturday, August 12

There is a very limited number of opportunities to become an AmeriCorps-YCC leader. A few select leaders will serve as an AmeriCorps member and earn an Education Award in addition to the stipend provided. This award will be in the amount of $1,230.

Click to enlarge Tucked in the far southwestern corner of Virginia with Kentucky to the North and Tennessee to the South lies Powell's Valley and Wilderness Road State Park. This park is a piece of a much larger trail, Wilderness Road, which stretches 120 miles through Tennessee, Virginia, and Kentucky. Five Reasons Virginia State Parks Should be on your Fall Bucket List
Shellie Anne

We've got leaves and we know how to use them at Virginia State Parks. After one of the hottest summers on record, most everyone is ready for the crisp cool fall to settle in across the mountains, piedmont and coastal plain of Virginia.

Here are five compelling reasons why Virginia State Parks should be on your fall bucket list.

Getting to Know Virginia: York River State Park

Bob Diller and Kevin Divins, Virginia Through Our Eyes

Click to Enlarge The skies treated us to some amazing vistas at York River State Park. The river and marshes were a source of some tranquil down time and fun time-travels to prehistoric Virginia via the fossils littering the beach that were just waiting to tell their stories. Sprinkle the beaches with wildflowers that even I'm unfamiliar with, well, that's paradise.
