Hatcherville Jodi Williams, Program Support Technician, Twin Lakes State Park
Sorry, Hatcher family, but your secret is now revealed: the park does not close after summer, we're open year round.
Every December I look forward to the Hatchers checking in. Why? Because they are so excited to be here! Here is Aldora Hatcher's story:
"Over 60 years ago, as children, we started attending what was then known as Prince Edward State Park with our Aunt (my mom's sister) and her family. And all we can remember about that place were the good times that we had!!!
Memories of staying all together in cozy cabins, swimming and taking our "first dives" off the diving board (giving mom the fright of her life), going to the dance hall dancing our hearts out, eating hot dogs and ice cream from the concession stand and just sitting back at night surrounded by the serenity and beauty of nature enjoying a host of conversations.
As life would have it, we grew older, started to "go to work" and began having our own families. And it was then that "the lake" became a distant memory.
When our mother passed in August of 2000, I felt the need to get a way for a while and regroup. For some reason, those memories of being with my mother at "the lake" resurfaced. It was then, after many years, that I decided to go back to what is now Twin Lakes State Park. The rest of my family later joined me there and once again we had the time of our lives!
We decided to make it our "special getaway" each year, turning Twin Lakes State Park for one weekend into Hatcherville!" --Aldora Hatcher
See you in December and we'll leave the porch light on.

It's a Dirty Job - But Someone Has to do it Dick Fox, Treasurer, Friends of Shenandoah River State Park
Thank You Friends and 2016 Annual River Cleanup Participants! On September 24th, we completed our EIGHTH Annual Shenandoah River Cleanup, sponsored by the Friends of the Shenandoah River State Park. Here's our group picture before we started getting dirty:
It was a beautiful weather day! The river was calm and clear and we left the 3 1/2 mile section of the river along the park boundary quite a bit cleaner. We had a total of 18 adults and 3 kids participating in 10 canoes, with two Friends volunteers ashore. We collected almost 200 pounds of trash out of the Shenandoah between Bentonville low-water bridge and the main canoe launch. Among many items, here is a list of some of the trash we collected:
60 beverage bottles
32 glass bottles
113 aluminum cans
28 plastic bags
49 food wrappers
2 canoe seats!
1 pillow
1 electric fan motor
Enough rope to tie up several hogs
5 TIRES (thanks Park staff for getting them recycled and Warren County Landfill for waiving the fees!)
6 items of construction materials
23 fishing lines/weights/lures etc. Many shoes and flip-flops (no pairs)
Some disgusting unmentionable items
The section in the Park itself was noted as pretty clean compared to last year, which hopefully says we are doing some good over the long haul.
A big thank you to our shore-side volunteers, Mary and Brian Bennett, who were stationed at the main canoe launch. They helped sign people in and fill out the data cards for all the trash we collected. Mary also brought water and apples to refresh the weary volunteers, while Brian and the park staff dragged all of our stuff ashore from the canoes and put it in the park dump truck.
Again for the EIGHTH YEAR(!), we want to thank Don Roberts at Front Royal Canoe Company and John Gibson at Downriver Canoe Company for lending us their canoes and for their staff members who helped drop off the volunteers at the Bentonville Bridge landing. And thanks to Jacob, Angela, Donna, David, Jessica, Stan, Jennifer, and other park staff members for taking reservations, getting us organized and hauling away the trash.
We got a wonderful thank-you and certificates of appreciation from Clean Virginia Waterways and Stewardship Virginia - suitable for framing once we find a wall in the river to put it on!
Please consider becoming a member of our Friends Group! And we hope to see you all again next year at the Friends of SHSP Annual River Cleanup.
Sincerely,
Dick Fox
Assistant Trash Coordinator

2016 Eastern Shore Birding and Wildlife Festival
David Gunnells, Assistant Park Manager, Kiptopeke State Park
It is time to start making plans to attend the 2016 Eastern Shore Birding and Wildlife Festival. The festival coincides with the migration of millions of birds along Virginia's Eastern Shore October 6-9, 2016.
Kiptopeke State Park is a great place to experience the nature of the Eastern Shore. The park has a variety of habitats from beaches to open fields to mature maritime forests. This variety in habitat provides the right conditions for many different bird species as well as other wildlife. In just a short walk, visitors to the park can see brown pelicans and blue herons on the beach and then bald eagles and hawks in the forest.
