Precious Memories at Douthat
Debbie Mooty, Travel Writer
| Christy and Cara |
This is where they learned to swim, really.
This is where they learned to dive, camp, hike, not leave their crackers out for the raccoons.
This is where they learned to enjoy s'mores around the campfire and to enjoy playing simple board games when it rained.
This is where they went to pick blackberries in the summer and learned how to tough it out when they wrecked their bikes.
This is where they made other summer pals and beautiful memories.
This is where Cara's grandparents used to come and where her father came when he was a child.
This is a very special place - Douthat State Park in Bath and Alleghany counties, Va. So it is fitting that this is where one of them would step into the most happiest of unions on a warm summer day this year. This is where our beautiful Cara, my daughter's childhood best friend, married on August 27th, 2016 - at Douthat State Park.
The ceremony was held at the Douthat shelter and was accented with beautiful white flowers and arrangements. Cara arrived with her father and as she stepped out the car, we all marveled at her beauty and elegance. The groom brought us to tears by declaring, "I've loved you since the first moment I saw you", and then we all rejoiced with applause and smiles when they were pronounced man and wife!
It rained around us during the picture time and the sun shined brilliantly through the windows during the reception as we laughed, cried at the videos that Cara's dad put together, and rejoiced as the newlyweds enjoyed their first meal together as man and wife. The first video was a reflection of Cara's life growing up and as the images flashed up of her as a baby, at Halloween and with Christy and her other friends, her mother and I could not help but let the tears flow! The second video was of her and Nick and it too brought tears of joy and reflection of this young couples amazing journey. Thanks dad for this amazing gift!
As you grow older, you realize that the great circle of life really does exist around us in almost every aspect of your life. You realize your most precious times through memories of just this type of day - joy, tears, laughter, good friends who are really family, and the moments you have shared with them all. It has been a privilege to watch these young people grow into mature young adults with wonderful lives ahead of them. It is with great pride that we send them forward to make wonderful contributions in life and to push forward the values they have been taught: work hard, have fun, share often, marvel at nature and above all, love one another -unconditionally!
Sounds like we may have yet another generation coming to Douthat!
Editors' Note: Debbie first reported the engagement of the happy couple in our March 2016 edition.

Our Visit to Belle Isle State Park
Sue Leon, Travel Writer
On our continuing goal of Virginia State Park's Trail Quest program, we ventured to a part of our state that we had not previously visited. Comprised of 892 acres, Belle Isle State Park offers an incredible variety of activities, camping, canoeing, kayaking and learning programs, just for starters. The park was in pristine condition as is every other state park we have had the pleasure of visiting. We were welcomed by two deer as we entered through the gates, busily grazing on the vegetation alongside the road.
Our first stop was at the Camp Store where we had the opportunity to meet two wonderful folks, Tommy and Cindy Neighbors. What a nice couple of people. They were knowledgeable about Belle Isle State Park and gave us information that would help make our visit the most it could be. They managed our purchases at the camp store and we were on our way to explore.
We drove down to the canoe launch area where there were some park visitors busily getting their canoe into Mulberry Creek, an access of the Rappahannock River, to enjoy a great time. There is a boardwalk that follows along Mulberry creek, also accessible to everyone, that affords the opportunity to view osprey, bald eagles and other birds who use these waters. A wonderful learning opportunity for those with children (and those of us who really don't know much about birds) is to learn the difference between a bird of prey and songbirds. If you have binoculars, be observant of how different talons and beaks appear, as well as overall size. Not to mention what do each kind eat. Have you ever seen a cardinal or bluebird swoop into the waters to catch a fish to eat with its talons? No, but it you watch osprey, eagles or other birds of prey, you'll see this is an everyday thing for them.
We saw campsites that had an abundance of trees giving a greater sense of being in the middle of nature and some privacy. All the sites were of generous size and could accommodate your full service or primitive camping needs. We learned that the full-service camping area is in operation starting in March to very early December. This gives you plenty of choices of dates to go. The primitive camping area is available year round. Located also at the campground bathhouse is laundry facilities. As with other Virginia State Parks, they request that no firewood be brought in with you. They had firewood available for purchase at the camp store.
If you are a brave soul, you can either hike in or boat in to the primitive campground at Brewer's Point. This is definitely for those wanting to rough-it and with determination for a very special outdoor experience.
We passed several picnic shelters where there was a family reunion happening. Lots of people, children having fun and the aroma of a delightful feast they had to be eagerly anticipating.
The Visitor Center, with its incredible views of the Rappahannock River, had several areas to sit outside to watch the river and birds. With ample parking, this building is totally accessible to anyone. There were two mounted binoculars for getting that close up view of something in the distance. Speaking of views, a short distance from the Visitor Center was Deep Creek, also an access of the Rappahannock River. This site had several docks and a nice boat ramp to access Deep Creek. There is plenty of parking near the boat ramp for your vehicle and boat trailer. A screened in picnic area is also there along with bathroom facilities. Be sure to follow all licensing requirements, if you want to fish, and any other applicable fees for boat launching. We learned there is an annual boat launch passport that is available for purchase. I highly suggest reviewing the Virginia State Park webpage for additional and useful information to make your visit the best it can be.
While the Mulberry Creek and Deep Creek form off the Rappahannock River, the main star is the river itself. We were fortunate to have had incredibly beautiful weather while we were there, so getting out and exploring was definitely on the "must do" list. There are twelve different and unique hiking and biking trails. One of the trails is designated handicapped accessible. All but two are also available by those on horseback. There is a designated area for equestrian parking. So, in total, there is approximately 10 miles of trails you can pick from. Be sure to keep your eyes open and be observant for predator birds, or birds of prey as well as deer, wild turkey, snakes, lizards and other wildlife. So much to see.
Just past the Contact Station, when first entering, is the historic Bel Air area. This area covers 33 acres along the Deep Creek, providing amazing views of the Rappahannock River. This area has been the site of weddings and with the incredible Bel Air House and Guest House, it would definitely be an incredible day to remember. Both are available to reserve for an overnight stay. We were particularly impressed with the grand Bel Air House, built in 1942. Built with a Colonial feel, it's very beautiful. Close by is the Bel Air Guest House, also a wonderful place to stay. There is a wealth of information on the Virginia State Park webpage regarding these facilities and especially if you want it for a large family/social gathering. We learned that Belle Isle Plantation was in use as far back as 1692. Lots of rich history on these grounds.
There wasn't any one thing that we were more captivated by during our visit to Belle Isle State Park. There were so many things to see and appreciate that it was a big overwhelming to say the least. You have the beauty of nature, boating ramps, camping and an old plantation site all in the same location. Factor in wildlife, birds, butterflies and the good people we met while visiting, you can't say there was one favorite thing. It was all wonderful and definitely worth making the time to come visit, if not once but more. We definitely want to return. And, as usual, the one thing we didn't like was having to leave.
Happy Hiking!

Conversations with Super Girls - VSP Youth Conservation Corps Annette Bareford, District II Visitor Services Specialist, Virginia State Parks
Those of you that read my blogs and stories know I really love my job and one of the better parts of my experiences is getting to work with volunteers and staff.
Recently I had the chance to sit down with the Virginia State Park's Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) that was stationed at Westmoreland State Park.
This all-girl team is working there for three weeks during one of the hottest summers on record. The courageous girls are not only dealing with the humidity but also a yellow jacket invasion at the paddle-in primitive campsite where they were installing an accessible feature to a tent pad. The yellow jackets became so aggressive park management decided to delay the project for the safety of the team and move them to another project.
