A Leisurely Day at Leesylvania
Sue Leon, Travel Writer
On a cool early spring's day, we made a day trip to Leesylvania State Park, located in Woodbridge, Virginia. Sitting along the Potomac River, the 543 acres that makes up the park, is filled with activities, trails, fishing and relaxing times. And, it's only a 30 minute drive from the Northern Virginia area.
While we were there, we had the chance to watch a train over the bridge. Not something you get to witness every day. As you first enter the park you will see the Park Office and Contact Station, filled with information about the park. From there, the road winds around and you are parallel to the majestic Potomac River. A large parking area was nearby, where people were busy unloading their boats into the Potomac for a day of fishing and recreation. The Breakwater Store is also located near the boat launch area to handle your last minute needs before heading out on your boat. The seagulls lined the railings to watch. I'm sure they were waiting to get their cut of any fish some kind soul would leave for them. There is also a fishing pier for those wanting to stay on land, but still make some good catches. There are even nice playground areas for children to play in and have a good time. So, something for everyone.
One thing to remember, is there is no swimming at Leesylvania State Park. Due to the currents, drop-offs and dangers that make swimming prohibited.
There were also osprey nests perched high on poles, waiting for warmer weather and the chance to be home for another clutch of baby osprey. That there were so many nests in the area was just neat to see. What a great opportunity for someone to watch the parent osprey bring in fresh fish to feed their young. That is always a wonderful thing to witness.
From the parking area, we drove to the Visitor Center. We gathered lots of information about the park, went through the exhibits showcasing an era spanning back before the Civil War, the Native American Indians of the area and post-Civil War times. It was very interesting. There were some children and they were able to try on some of reproduction garbs of that time. They were adorable and had a good time, judging by the smiles we saw and parents taking pictures.
One piece of information we learned, that we were unaware of, is that this area is on the National Register of Historic Landmarks. We also learned that Captain John Smith had visited this same area. It's incredible to think that we, along with others who have visited before us, had maybe stood on the same spot where Captain John Smith had. That really makes you have even more appreciation of the history surrounding this area. Off to the side of the Visitor Center is an old cannon, obviously showing that this area was witness to that time.
We enjoyed, in particular, the display of recycled plastic 2-liter bottles that were carefully joined together in front of the Visitor Center, growing plants. What a wonderful way to recycle, not to mention adding visual interest and curiosity. What a fun activity to do with your children or grandchildren. Not only will they learn about repurposing recyclables, but also about what all is needed to make plants grow. With the bottles being plastic, they can easily view the root systems as they grow and develop.
If you want to get in some hiking, there are five trails to choose from, with moderate to easy levels of difficulty. There is one that is handicap accessible and another that is partially accessible. With lots of shade trees in the area, you'll stay cool regardless of which trail you choose. If you keep a watchful eye, you'll likely spot deer or other wildlife in the area. We were fortunate to see a small herd of deer.
Even though it was a little cool, we certainly were not disappointed in the least at what we saw and experienced. It just goes to show that any Virginia State Park, regardless of the time of year, is always beautiful and has something to offer. Memories are always the best thing to bring home, and for us, of course, lots of pictures.
Come experience Leesylvania State Park for yourself. It is a beautiful park just waiting for you to visit.
Happy Camping!
