Marbled Salamander at Shenandoah River
Jennifer Saik, Education Specialist II/Volunteer Coordinator, Shenandoah River State Park

Click Here to enlarge photo Several months ago, biologist Hannah Bement took a hike on the Big Oak Loop Trail in Shenandoah River State Park, to check out the large vernal pool adjacent to the trail. She noticed that the pool was teaming with salamander larvae and after close inspection, she hypothesized that they were very likely Marbled salamanders, due to the upland forest location of the pool. Because this species has never been documented in the park, we decided to collect some larvae and raise them in the visitor center to confirm their identity.

Click Here to enlarge photo We created a home for the larvae by filling a glass tank with water from the vernal pool and adding aquatic plants like Moneywort. We introduced the larvae into the aquarium and began feeding them a diet of Daphnia and Bloodworms. Once a few of the salamanders began losing their external gills, we added layers of soil and moss to the perimeter, creating both a pond area and dry land for the more mature larvae.

Last week, the larvae finally matured enough that park manager Tony Widmer was able to positively confirm that they were in fact Marbled salamanders, which was an exciting discovery! We then released the majority of the salamanders back into the vernal pool where we found them originally. We decided to keep a few of them at the visitor center in the live animal exhibit area, to be used for future interpretive programming.

Click Here to enlarge photo Raising these little guys has been a really fun experience for our staff. Because these salamanders spend most of their lives burrowing underground, they are not often seen, other than occasionally during their fall breeding season. We encourage folks to stop by the park visitor center to view them, especially as the summer progresses and they get bigger.

Westmoreland State Park Celebrates 80 Years

Annette Bareford District II Visitor Services Specialist, Virginia State Parks

The 80th Anniversary Celebration was a fine day for visitors at Westmoreland State Park. The cabin and camping guests felt very fortunate indeed when they found out Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe was going to be at the park for the Virginia State Park's 80th Anniversary celebration. The day was one of fun and friendship as the National Park Service (NPS) and Virginia State Parks exchanged Pin Oak trees to plant in commemoration of both entities monumental anniversaries. It's the NPS's 100th Anniversary as well as Virginia State Park's 80th. The weather cooperated and it was another beautiful day at Westmoreland State Park as Governor McAuliffe and Denise Ryan, Deputy Director of the National Park Service, planted the oak tree near the fountain area. Those in attendance included the Secretary of Natural Resources, the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) Director, the DCR Deputy Director, the State Parks Director, park guests, local officials and state representatives, local law enforcement, state employees and park neighbors and park "Friends".

Part of the celebration included the official dedication of the fountain that was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1936. The interpretive signage explaining the park's history was also unveiled. The Friends of Westmoreland State Park worked diligently to restore the fountain which has been dormant for around 50 years or more. The Friends physically removed dirt, plants and debris that had built up over the years. They also raised money to fund the new interpretive signage that go along with fountain area. A local stone mason trained members of the Virginia State Park's Youth Conservation Corps to help with the repairs to the original stone work.

A time capsule was filled and buried with Governor McAuliffe challenging everyone there to return in 20 years for the 100th Anniversary of Virginia State Parks when the time capsule will be opened and the contents reveled!

It was a very exciting day for all but I think the big hit of the day came from a special visit from the" First Puppy" Guinness. Children from the Washington District Elementary School and Cople District Elementary School were very excited to see the Governor and take a hike with him on one of the many trails at Westmoreland State Park, but I think the lanky, sweet faced puppy was almost as popular.

Westmoreland State Park is one of the original six state parks that were all built in the 1930's by the Civilian Conservations Corps (CCC). Virginia was the very first state to open an entire state park system on the same day. To date there are 36 and soon to be 37 Virginia State Parks all across the Commonwealth. If you would like to plan an overnight visit to Westmoreland State Park please call the Customer Service Center 1800 933-PARK (7275) or visit the website dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/reservations to make a reservation. For more information on Westmoreland State Park please call the park office (804)493-8821 or email [email protected].

Leave No Trace on the York River

John Gresham, Education Support Specialist, York River State Park

Click to Enlarge Leave No Trace is more than a slogan to help encourage people not to litter. LNT is a movement of outdoor recreation enthusiast who seek the most ethical ways of enjoying the outdoors and leaving the least amount of impact. York River State Park will host an entry level Leave No Trace Workshop on June 25, at 10 a.m., at the amphitheater behind the visitor center. Our instructor, Dave Lauthers is a LNT Master Educator as well as a Virginia Master Naturalist and Outdoor Ethics Advocate with the Colonial Virginia Council of the Boy Scouts of America. His wealth of knowledge and personable approach to enjoying the natural world is a great way to observe the Great American Campout in a park that doesn't have camping facilities.

We are also offering our ever popular ranger guided Fossil Frenzy Hike from 4 to 6 p.m. and will have a demonstration of life in a Civil War era campsite from 1 to 5 p.m. Guests are also encouraged to take on self guided adventures on our 40 miles of trails and our estuarine waterways. Come to the workshop in the morning and spend the rest of the day practicing the principles of Leave No Trace.

06/24/2016    Soldier's Story   7:00 p.m. - 7:45 p.m.   The American Civil War ended not too far from modern-day Holliday Lake State Park. Confederate soldiers passed just north of Holliday Creek while retreating from Richmond after the Siege of Petersburg. With Union soldiers close behind and gaining, Confederate General Robert E. Lee hoped to regroup and resupply at Appomattox Court House. However, the Union had destroyed the waiting supplies leading to a final skirmish between the two sides. After deciding it would be impossible to push on to Lynchburg, General Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. Heading home after the surrender, many soldiers walked by this area again, this time with lighter steps and heavier hearts. Gather around the campfire as an Appomattox Court House National Historical Park reenactor brings the ups and downs of a soldier's story to life.    This program is a partnership with the National Park Service in celebration of their 100th anniversary. Please contact the Park Office with any questions regarding park programs or to set up private programs for a group.      Location - Amphitheater    Phone - (804) 796-4255
