Season's Greetings
Craig Seaver, Virginia State Parks Director

As I write this greeting to our park friends, guests, and family, I turn yet another year older. As is usually the case in moments like these, it is a time to pause and reflect on the many "seasons" that have passed in this old park ranger's personal and state park life. In park circles, the word "season" takes on a bit of a different meaning. There is the main season, the shoulder season, and at one time, there was an off-season. That last one has pretty much disappeared as of late as state parks offer year round recreational opportunities and programs.

It is my hope that this holiday season, you and your family have a blessed time full of many moments that will become memories. I will also take this opportunity to pass along my sincere appreciation to our many volunteers, "friends", employees and their families for creating and providing that Virginia State Park experience to millions of our park guests. I look forward to 2016 as an exciting year of great things for Virginia State Parks as we celebrate our 80th anniversary.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

10 Reasons to Fall in Love with Virginia State Parks: Part 3
Shellie Anne

Virginia has 36 fabulous state parks that range from the Cumberland Gap in the furthest Southwestern corner of our state to the Atlantic Ocean. We have parks that are small, medium and expansive, with activities that range from horseback riding to fossil hunting. Many of these Virginia State Parks are based in and around a water feature like a river, lake or bay, which gives them an even grander appeal. Everyone loves water, from recreational activities, breathtaking scenery to the abundance of wildlife found there.

There are many reasons to fall in love with Virginia State Parks, but for this series I am showcasing 10 reasons that immediately come to mind, and we hope you will agree.

Douthat in the Fall

We enjoyed our first visit to Douthat State Park a few weeks ago. We love hiking, fishing, picnicking and just being out in nature. Douthat provides all of this and more.

We brought our kayaks along and enjoyed paddling around the lake; me taking photos and enjoying the birds and my husband enjoyed the fishing.

We stayed in Cabin #10 which was small and cozy for two. We loved the rustic look and the old fireplace, which we enjoyed both nights. I loved finding the cabin journal on the mantle and reading other visitor's memories and adding our own trip story.

The leaves were just a little past peak but still beautiful. I enjoyed walking along the Heron Run Trail, which is easy and has lovely views of the lake.

I would also like to say that the staff is most helpful and friendly. The check-in at the office was a pleasant experience and we were able to eat a late lunch at the Lakeview Restaurant on their last open day of the season.

We will definitely be back for a longer visit next time! Thank you for a wonderful stay!

01/01/2016    First Day Hike - Fresh New Start   8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.   Enjoy a fresh new start to a brand new year with a special winter-themed Ranger led hike at 1 p.m. around Martin's Station (about .5 mile) that takes you from a modern setting into a glimpse of the 18th century Virginia frontier. Hikers will visit seven stops on the easy rated trail with information about the bison that grazed in the area, the river cane Boone tagged the Beargrass, the Indian camp, Joseph Martin's first cabin, the blacksmith shop, Martin's Station fort, and the Robinson cabin; an authentic 18th century structure recently relocated to the park. Can't make it to the ranger led hike? No worries. An informative brochure will provide details for a self-guided hike, including what mother nature had in store for those settlers who navigated the Wilderness Road during winter's harshest times.    Sign up for our team challenge or photo contest for a chance to win prizes. York River State Park   Located at 9801 York River Park Road Williamsburg VA 23188
01/01/2016    First Day Hike   11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.   We will kick off the New Year with a trek to a distant, hidden gem in the park. The Pamunkey Overlook is at the bottom of a steep bluff along the York River. The observation platform gives guests a commanding view over the cord grass and across the river to Wererocommico, where Chief Powhatan once ruled Tidewater Virginia.     Along the Backbone and Pamunkey Trails, we will walk past the sites where slave cabins, blacksmith's, and wheelwright's shops once stood as part of the Taskinas Plantation. We will also crisscross our equestrian and mountain bike trails. Guests will take in history and get a glimpse of other outdoor adventures we offer.     We will cover a little over 4 miles. Bring water and a lunch/snack and be prepared to pack in/pack out. Much of the terrain is flat. But, the hill leading to the overlook is steep. Dogs on leashes are welcome.     We will begin the day with a welcome to the New Year for all the hikers, horseback riders, and mountain bikers.    Can't make the guided hike? Create your own First Day Hike experience in the park. Parking fees are waived for the day. The first 50 guests in the park on Jan. 1 will receive a special commemorative 80th anniversary pin.
