Southwest Virginia Museum Features "Chair Caning" for March Artisan Series Workshop
Aaron Davis, Assistant Park Manager, Southwest Virginia Museum
The Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park launches the 2015 Artisan Series of programs, providing visitors with opportunities to create handmade crafts with regional artisans. The first workshop in this monthly series is Chair Caning on Monday, March 16 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Caning is a method of weaving chair seats and other furniture either while building new chairs or in the process of cane chair repair. Participants will use this technique to create a foot stool, learning how to cane in the process. The fee for this workshop is $40, which includes all supplies for the project as well as use of the tools required to complete the stool.
The workshop can accommodate 10 adult individuals or adult pairs, so register early by calling (276) 523-1322.
The Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park's Artisan Series will offer a craft project on the third Monday of every month from March through December in 2015. For more information about upcoming workshops, please contact park staff.

Take A Hike! Jason Huskey, Twin Lakes State Park
Twin Lakes State Park has a pretty strong message for you: Time to stop piddling about the house and start paddling around the lake, and more!
Spring has returned to central Virginia. The grass is growing, the first flower blossoms are showing, and everywhere there are signs that the days are getting longer and warmer.
Pretty soon the air won't just be filled with the buzz of bees and birdcalls but that other of sign of spring: excited children out of school for Spring Break!
Click Here for our Challenge to You, where we throw down the gauntlet
This year, instead of kids spending the week inside playing video games and complaining of nothing to do, why not get them outside to learn new things at an award winning Virginia State Park?

A Separate Sound
Tom Kneipp, Park Ranger, Bear Creek Lake State Park
Early March is the time to get goosed at Bear Creek Lake State Park. A flock of Canada (not Canadian) Geese have been here on their winter migration. A large number come to the Virginia piedmont region to spend a couple months in the relatively balmy south. Resident geese at the Park number about 20 individuals. They move about local farm ponds and adjoining Cumberland State Forest lakes. Visitors to the park notice them less often in the summer months when human activity keeps the geese away from the beach area during the day. At night they sometimes return to feed on the well-kept lawn, and can be a nuisance with the droppings they leave behind.
The migratory geese add more than 70 ganders and geese to the gaggle. They pay no attention to the signs that say: "Keep the Wild in Wildlife. Do Not Feed Ducks and Geese." They ask for nothing but to share a moment of survival in an environment we have created. These temporary residents in return provide us with wildness. The flock flies each morning and evening to stimulate their metabolism, as do the resident geese. All geese "honk" to communicate as they make their flights, but the call of the migratory geese is not quite the same as that of the resident geese. The calls sound alike to the casual observer, but listen closer, quietly. The visitors have a separate sound. Not a different sound, but an inflection in tone that says: "we are free". Free from reliance on human influence of the environment; people only provide an opportunity for themselves and the geese take advantage of it. Free to live as geese in ways that humans cannot fully control. That call is a sound we of a modern society can hear, can recognize, but will not ever again fully understand. A wild sound. A separate sound.
Sometimes, some resident geese return with the migratory flock back to the north as the days become longer and warmer. Perhaps the easy life cannot hold them. Perhaps they are drawn to the edge in that music that too often we humans do not hear. That separate sound will echo off the trees along Lakeside Trail for only another few weeks. As the echo fades, along with it fades a moment of wildness we should try to recall in ourselves.
Bear Creek Lake State Park is located in Cumberland County. The Park is open every day, and provides easy access points to a variety of trails that that allow the visitor to experience lakeside or forest winter and early spring discoveries.
