4th Living Building Certified in the World
Bertchi School in Seattle first in the PNW with help of Bellingham's 2020 Engineering
2020 ENGINEERING joined forces with other Seattle-area design professionals to form the Restorative Design Collective. This pro bono team shares the desire to push themselves and their firms to the forefront of the sustainable building movement and create a built case study of a Living Building. This effort has recently been fulfilled through the design, construction, and commissioning of the Bertschi School's Living Building Science Classroom which has just been certified as the first Living Building in Washington State by the International Living Future Institute.
2020 ENGINEERING's role in the project included the design of the building's water systems including a rainwater harvesting system designed for potable use, a greywater reuse system for irrigation of an indoor green wall, a composting toilet, and low impact development stormwater strategies including bioretention, pervious pavements, and green roofs. The building was designed to meet a Net Zero Water balance. After design, permitting, and construction, the building's systems were commissioned over a 12 month period to confirm that the systems performed as intended, and prove that they met the imperatives of the Living Building Challenge v2.0.
