We're excited to announce that Eryn K. S. Clipp, M.D. will join Virginia Women's Center in June. Dr. Clipp will be practicing at our Mechanicsville location. Originally from Silver Spring, Maryland, Dr. Clipp earned her bachelor's degree from Emory University and her medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. She completed her internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Medical College of Virginia and was awarded the Resident Research Award in 2013. Following residency, Dr. Clipp practiced with Westside OB-GYN in Burlington, North Carolina before returning to Richmond to practice with Virginia Women's Center. She is a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Clipp enjoys providing complete OB-GYN care throughout the continuum of life. Her interests lie in working with adolescents as well as using minimally invasive surgical techniques to treat certain gynecologic conditions. Dr. Clipp enjoys offering her obstetrical patients a low-intervention and family-centered labor and delivery experience; however, she is also comfortable in managing high-risk pregnancies in conjunction with our maternal-fetal medicine specialists. When she is not working, Dr. Clipp spends as much time as she can with her husband and young son. As a family, they enjoy traveling and being active outdoors. Wellness and Well-being: All Moms are Working Moms
By Mary Polce-Lynch, Ph.D.When we set aside perceived differences between employed and stay-at-home mothers, we see that all moms are hardworking "full-time" moms. So Happy Mother's Day from Virginia Women's Center to all hardworking mothers! In 2012, the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed 68.3 percent of married mothers with a spouse were employed outside the home while 75.2 percent of mothers with other marital statuses (single, widowed, divorced, etc.) were in the work force. These data suggest that although most mothers work outside the home, the choice for some mothers to "opt out" of the work force can often be a flash point for envy, resentment and guilt between working and stay-at-home moms. This unnecessary tension can prevent mothers from sharing all the joys and burdens they actually have in common. Truce: Ending the Mommy WarsMoms who stay at home and moms who work outside the home BOTH struggle. In addition, each often envies the other! The employed mom may wish she had more free time for her child and the time to stop for coffee after dropping her kids off in the mornings while the stay-at-home mom might like opportunities that reflect upon her as a capable and creative person in her own right. It is past time to end whatever part each of us plays in perpetuating the "mommy wars." The main weapon in the mommy wars is judgment. It may come disguised in different forms (envy, jealousy, guilt) but at the core is negatively judging others - as well as ourselves. Thoughts such as, "She doesn't have it as hard as I do because... (enter your particular justification here) or "I never do enough for my kids..." are just two examples of the criticisms we may aim at other moms and ourselves. But the truth is, if you reread the previous judgments, both could be said by both groups of moms. To continue reading this article, visit our Web site.
