Wellness and Well-being: Overcoming Insomnia

By Lisa Cuseo-Ott, Ph.D.

As a follow-up to last month's article on "The Important Role of Sleep in Our Lives," this month we'll look at the times when, despite practicing good sleep hygiene, we may have difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep. This difficulty defines the state of insomnia, which affects approximately six to 10 percent of the population. Insomnia can be related to transient events in our lives, such as stress and worry about work or a relationship, or it can be chronic in nature and last more than one month. Insomnia is a common symptom in the psychiatric conditions of anxiety and depression and it tends to be more prevalent in women and older adults.

There are several reasons why older adults are at an increased risk for insomnia and some of them include medical conditions, side effects from medications, joint pain, nocturnal urination and primary sleep disorders such as sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome (Rybarczyk, et al., 2012). Furthermore, the sleep cycle changes as we age. With age, we often experience lower awakening thresholds, decreases in the later stages of deep sleep and less time in Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep.
