Greetings!
We are pleased to announce that DCI board president, Anna Jones has won the Molly Brown Award, presented by Historic Denver at their 2012 annual awards ceremony. Each year, the Molly Brown Award honors a woman who has demonstrated a Molly Brown-like passion for making Denver a stronger community. Anna Jones has devoted many years to civic life in Denver. Anna is the current vice president of Progressive Urban Management Associates and provides project management and lead support for community development, downtown planning and business improvement district projects. Like Mrs. Brown, Anna has raised money for causes she believes in -- when the 2004 tsunami hit Sri Lanka, killing 30,000 Sri Lankans, Anna and her husband raised $30,000 in a little over a month to fund the construction of three new houses. Please join us in congratulating our very own Anna Jones!
Cheers!

SaveLocal Group Coupons for Small Businesses
|
Just in time for Small Business Saturday, Constant Contact has recently launched a new tool to help small businesses create their own group coupon just like Groupon, Living Social Deals, Yipit and others. SaveLocal
lets you create and sell shareable local deals that are good for customers and good for your business. This program gives you the tools you need to make the deal a success. With SaveLocal, you create and send deals to new and loyal customers for as little as $1 per coupon sold.
This can be a great way to bring in customers to local businesses. Consider creating a package of all SaveLocal sales in your town for tourists to visit your community on a budget, and for locals to treat themselves to a "stay-cation" with discounted meals at a restaurant, half-priced entertainment or outdoor activities, and more!

Making the Most of Small Business Saturday
November 24, 2012
| |
The National Retailers Federation (NRF) expects holiday sales to increase 4.1% this holiday season. Wouldn't it be great to see sales increase in the small businesses that give your downtown its unique character? On November 24, small businesses across the nation will have their doors open, ready to kick-off the holiday season with Small Business Saturday, the main street alternative to the chaotic, big-box shopping that occurs on Black Friday the day before.
As a downtown leader, consider these tools to support your downtown merchants on Small Business Saturday, and encourage shoppers to focus their spending locally this holiday season.
1. Make an event out of it! Meet with the business owners to coordinate hours, plan discounts and specials, and cross-promote each other. If the weather is nice, work with shop owners to have a sidewalk sale, create a scavenger hunt for shoppers to visit all of the participating stores and get a free hot chocolate or coffee if they complete the hunt. Snap photos on your phones, and tag shoppers and stores on your downtown's Facebook page. Be sure to promote your event in the local newspaper, online, and community announcements. Promote it as a FUN shopping experience to jump-start the holiday season. Have a local salon or day spa? See if they will offer discounted services to help shoppers relax during the day.

Partner Resources: Western Hardrock Watershed Team
| |
The Western Hardrock Watershed Team (WHWT) provides important capacity-building support to rural mining communities. Made possible by an innovative partnership among the Office of Surface Mining (OSM), AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteer in Service to America), Southwest Conservation Corps, state mining offices and local community/watershed groups, the WHWT places year-long, college-trained OSM/VISTA Volunteer Watershed Development Coordinators with local groups working in communities impoverished by pre-regulatory mining activity in their home place/watersheds. Each placement is for a minimum of three years, requiring a commitment to capacity building and long-term improvement at each WHWT site. DCI has recently partnered with the WHWT, and have received an OSM/VISTA placement for the next three years. As a part of this partnership, DCI is continuing to learn of more resources that are available for our members.
Consider the following resources to help your community accomplish a variety of projects:
AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps): Communities and organizations can utilize work crews to implement hands-on service-learning and direct service projects. NCCC teams are obtainable to help community and faith-based organizations, national nonprofits, schools, local municipalities, federal and state entities, and Indian tribes. Service projects must focus on one of five major program areas - Natural and Other Disasters, Infrastructure Improvement, Environmental Stewardship and Conservation, Energy Conservation, and Urban and Rural Development.
Southwest Conservation Corps (SCC): Youth work crews based in Southwest Colorado. Partners are given opportunities to accomplish critical conservation projects while providing young adults from the regional community an opportunity to learn about land management issues and challenges. Types of projects include: Historic Preservation, Urban Parks Maintenance, Watershed Restoration, Mining Reclamation/Restoration, etc.
Toolkit for working with Rural Volunteers: The Toolkit for Working with Rural Volunteers illustrates approaches to volunteer recruitment, management and retention that are successful in rural settings. It also contains one-of-a-kind tools needed by rural organizations to build sustainable volunteer management infrastructure.

The 20 Ingredients of an Outstanding Downtown: 3-Part Webinar Series
| |
Presented by Roger Brooks, CEO of Destination Development International
Over several years Destination Development International (DDI) surveyed and researched 400 successful downtowns and downtown districts (both rural and urban) to find the 20 most common ingredients that led to their success. In this three-part series, Roger Brooks from DDI has broken the ingredients down into three sets:
Part 1. What property owners should do
Part 2. The public sectors responsibilities
Part 3. The merchants to-do list
You'll see dozens of photographic examples, case histories and "how they did it" stories.
If you want increased tourism, new residents, new investment, and want to stem the "leakage" of locally-earned money being spent elsewhere, this webinar will provide you with the answers.
