Michael Curry preaches dynamic sermon at closing Eucharist
President Obama sends congratulations to first African-American elected as presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church
Michael Curry, bishop of North Carolina and presiding bishop-elect of the Episcopal Church, electrified and energized deputies, bishops and others at General Convention, telling them: "If you remember nothing else I say this morning, it's the first word of the Great Commission: GO! And the reason I lift up that word "go" is because we are the Jesus movement." Curry also took time to pay tribute to the current presiding bishop, Katharine Jefferts Schori, who celebrated the closing Eucharist, and the Rev. Gay Jennings, president of the House of Deputies, who also took part in the service. A video of the sermon is below; the full text is available here. Jefferts Schori paused during the service (below) to read a letter from President Barack Obama offering congratulations to Curry on his election. "Your leadership over the years has reflected your powerful vision for a more inclusive tomorrow," Obama wrote. "Guided by your commitment to a future of greater compassion and opportunity, I trust you will continue to use your gifts to bring people of all faiths and backgrounds together to realize the America we know is possible."

General Convention 2015 concludes its work, looks towards Austin
Bishops and deputies at General Convention completed their final sessions July 3 by 6 p.m. on July, happy to have gotten through most of their legislative calendars.
In the final hour of their meeting, the bishops elected Bishop Suffragan Diane Jardine Bruce of the Diocese of Los Angeles as secretary. She had served as assistant secretary in the last trienium, taking the secretary's role at several sessions during this convention.
News stories from Episcopal News Service about actions taken on July 3 regarding the prayer book, hymnal, budget and more are linked below. Additional articles will be posted on the ENS website on Monday.
The next meeting of General Convention will be held in 2018 in Austin, Texas.

ECW and the Homeless Youth Resource Center
by Barbara Harris
The Episcopal Church Women of the Diocese of Los Angeles held a special fundraiser for the churchwide ECW Community Connection. We raised close to $1,000 to purchase hygiene kits for the Volunteers of America Homeless Youth Outreach Center in Salt Lake City. With this money we were able to purchase 550 hygiene kits, each of which contained a comb, toothbrush, toothpaste and several other small items in a re-sealable bag. Read more here.

It's impossible to cover General Convention alone, and I thank the bishops, deputies, alternates, ECW Triennial delegates and others who provided information and photos to help enliven these reports: especially Diane Jardine Bruce, Mary Glasspool, Kathryn Nishibayashi, Mel Soriano, Susan Russell and Jim White.
Thanks also to the Episcopal News Service's General Convention reporting staff, including Matthew Davies, Pat McCaughan, Mary Frances Schjonberg, Sharon Sheridan, Tracy Sukraw, and Lynette Wilson. Please read their excellent reports: you'll find out so much about how this church of ours works.
I especially am grateful to the Rev. Canon Pat McCaughan, vicar of St. George's Church, Laguna Hills, who as usual pulled double duty as a reporter for Episcopal News Service and a contributor to the Episcopal News. She is the best of reporters and the best of friends.
For this General Convention, signing off. See you in the Episcopal News Update, Weekly and magazine (next issue due out in August).
Cheers!
