[Episcopal News Service - Salt Lake City] In the wake of the June 26 U.S. Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage for all Americans, General Convention followed suit on July 1 with canonical and liturgical changes to provide marriage equality for Episcopalians. The House of Deputies concurred with the House of Bishops' approval the day before of a canonical change eliminating language defining marriage as between a man and a woman (Resolution A036) and authorizing two new marriage rites with language allowing them to be used by same-sex or opposite-sex couples (Resolution A054). The deputies and bishops were about to begin a joint session on the church budget; the presiding officers relaxed the house rules for a few minutes to allow alternates and photographers on the floor for full-deputation photos. July 2 will see the last of the legislative committee hearings, which usually take place in the early morning hours. Jim White, at left, chair of the Los Angeles deputation, cheered as the Governance and Structure Legislative Committee - on which Bishop Mary Glasspool also served - concluded the last of its hearings on July 1. Legislative sessions will continue today, July 2, and into the evening if the presiding officers deem it necessary in order to get through the calendar. Photo / Susan Russell

Packing up the Exhibit Hall
Things got a whole lot quieter at General Convention after exhibitors ranging from clergy and church supply houses to Episcopal Relief & Development and other agencies took down their booths, packed up their displays and merchandise and headed for home as the Exhibit Hall closed for this convention. At left, the Rev. James Prendergast, chancellor of the Diocese of Los Angeles and a visitor to convention, pays a last visit to the Exhibit Hall. Below, the Rev. Canon Michael Bamberger, deputy from Los Angeles, poses at the Episcopal Relief & Development booth with Katie Mears, the agency's director of U.S. disaster programs. Bamberger is disaster relief coordinator for the Diocese of Los Angeles. He has worked with Mears and others at Episcopal Relief & Development on creating an asset map that locates emergency and relief services available in each diocese of the Episcopal Church. Ecumenical cooperation
Joanne Leslie, archdeacon of the Diocese of Los Angeles (pictured at left), and other deacons "and friends with diaconal hearts," she said, spent part of July 1 working at the local branch of the United Methodist Committee on Relief, helping to sort and pack supplies to be used when disaster strikes. The deacons weren't the only one to jump into local relief efforts; the Episcopal Church Women and Girls Friendly Society collected toiletries and supplies for Homeless Youth Resource Center in Salt Lake City for this year's "Community Connection" project, in which ECW members support a charity in the city hosting the General Convention. |

The Joint Standing Committee on Program, Budget and Finance (PB&F) July 1 proposed a budget for The Episcopal Church in the 2016-2018 triennium that includes a major new $2 million initiative on racial justice and reconciliation, even as it reduces the amount of money it asks dioceses to contribute to 15 percent by 2018.
General Convention takes a first step, admits: 'Alcohol affects us all' The House of Bishops on July 1 passed three resolutions, one with an amendment, on the issue of alcohol and drug abuse. "I'm Mark and I'm an alcoholic," said Bishop Mark Hollingsworth of Ohio, chair of the Legislative Committee on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, as he introduced the resolutions to the House of Bishops and acknowledged his own journey of addiction and recovery.General Convention approved making available a revised resource for calendar commemorations but stopped short of officially authorizing it as a liturgical resource for use in the next triennium. Kurt Barnes will remain the treasurer of the General Convention after the House of Bishops voted to re-elect him on June 30. Much happens each day during General Convention. In addition to Episcopal News Service's other coverage, here are some additional news items from July 1, the seventh day of the June 25-July 3 gathering.
