Reporting from Salt Lake City, Utah

June 23, 2015
The Salt Palace
Greetings from Salt Lake City, Utah, where deputies, bishops, exhibitors, journalists, visitors and volunteers are gathering from all over the Episcopal Church. The meetings will take place in Salt Lake City's convention center, better known as The Salt Palace (pictured above).

Legislative aspects of General Convention don't begin until Thursday, June 25, but registration has started and the exhibit hall is open for business. Legislative committees will begin their work this evening, and a number of other organizations will hold events tonight.

The General Convention office of the Episcopal Church has provided some useful materials to read online, including an organizational chart that shows how General Convention does its work through the House of Deputies, the House of Bishops and about 20 legislative committees and other groups. For an online guide to all things GC-related, visit the Media Hub.

Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori and House of Deputies President Gay Jennings have issued welcome letters, in which they express some of their hopes and expectations for this meeting of General Convention. Their letters may be read here and here, respectively.

On Wednesday, June 24, Jefferts Schori and Jennings both will make presentations to convention, beginning at 9 a.m. Orientation for bishops and deputies will follow. In the afternoon, the Joint Committee for the Nomination of the Presiding Bishop -- of which Bishop Mary Glasspool is a member -- will present the four candidates, one of whom will be elected on Saturday to succeed Jefferts Schori when her nine-year term ends Nov. 1. On Thursday, both houses will begin their legislative sessions. The Triennial Meeting of the Episcopal Church women also begins officially on Thursday.

For more about the deputies and Triennial delegates from the Diocese of Los Angeles, see The Episcopal News, Summer 2015 issue, here.

Bishop Jon Bruno has asked that you keep your deputation and bishops in your prayers; see his video message here.

These reports will continue throughout General Convention. I hope you enjoy following the journey of your representatives at this triennial gathering.

Convention's liturgy and music committee to consider saints, songs, prayers
The General Convention's Prayer Book, Liturgy and Music Committee faces a full docket of liturgical resolutions at the 78th meeting of convention, even with the Standing Commission on Liturgy and Music's resolutions and others concerning marriage-related resources and rites now referred to a separate legislative committee.

Convention challenged to expand global missionary opportunities
Crossing cultural boundaries, building partnerships, and engaging God's mission locally and globally are at the very heart of The Episcopal Church's missionary program. The 78th General Convention, meeting June 25 - July 3 in Salt Lake City, Utah, will be asked in two proposed resolutions to commit to its ongoing support and development of the Episcopal Church's Young Adult Service Corps (YASC) and Episcopal Volunteers in Mission (EVIM) programs.
