Serve DC Joins more than 500 Volunteers for Global Youth Service Day 2013, April 26-28
|
April 26-28, 2013 marked the 25th anniversary of Global Youth Service Day (GYSD), an annual campaign that celebrates and mobilizes young people to improve their communities through service and service-learning. More than 135 countries participated in this year's activities, and, in the District of Columbia, more than 500 volunteers gave back at 15 youth-led projects in each ward of the city.
In partnership with Youth Service America, Serve DC is proud to serve as GYSD lead agency for the District of Columbia. GYSD lead agencies are state or local organizations that convene GYSD partners, coordinate youth service projects, and engage local media and elected officials. Serve DC Honors Emergency Preparedness Volunteers with Award Ceremony & Reception
|
On Wednesday, April 17, Serve DC highlighted volunteer contributions to District public safety and emergency preparedness efforts with a volunteer appreciation reception at the Renaissance Washington, DC Downtown Hotel. Three awards were presented, including:
Promising Partnership Award to Team Rubicon Region III for its support with local disaster recovery efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Team Rubicon unites the skills and experiences of military veterans with first responders to rapidly deploy emergency response teams.
Preparing the Whole Community Award to the Mayor's Office on Latino Affairs (OLA) for its dedication and commitment to preparing all District communities for emergencies and disasters. OLA is working with partners across the District to provide Spanish-language emergency preparedness training and resources.
Community Preparedness Hero Award to Calvert Potter for going above and beyond to improve and increase emergency preparedness in District communities. Mr. Potter is a firefighter with the DC Fire & Emergency Medical Service Department and a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) trainer and advocate.

Serve DC Hosts Spring CERT Training Drill & Demonstration at Fire Academy on May 11
|
The drill provides CERT-trained volunteers with a simulated, "real-world" opportunity to practice skills learned in CERT training. CERT volunteers participate as responders and victims and react in real time to a simulated emergency scenario. FEMS personnel serve as onsite evaluators and safety officers, providing valuable feedback and hands-on guidance to participants.

Resilient DC Community Forum is an opportunity to make more meaningful connections that strengthen the community and build resilience.
Join the DC Department of Health (DOH) on May 15 for lively discussion, presentations, break-out sessions, and networking focused on strategies for building community connections and resilience in the District. Attendees represent business, social services, faith-based, education, and media organizations, as well as District government agencies, and others.

Funding Opportunity: DC Children & Youth Investment Trust Corporation Announces One City Summer Initiative Mini-Grants
|
As a part of the District's 2013 One City Summer Initiative (OCSI), the DC Children & Youth Investment Trust Corporation (the Trust) has created a fund to support programming and events in communities across the city. OCSI is Mayor Gray's proposal to create partnerships between District agencies and community-based organizations to provide safe, fun and rewarding summer programming for children, youth and families.
Mini-grants will be awarded to organizations for programs and events that align with the One City Youth Goals and Outcomes, which include Workforce Development, Educational Achievement, Healthy Lifestyles, Safety and Structure, and Strengthening Families. All programs and events must serve younger youth (5-12 years old), older youth (13-18 years old), young adults (19-24 years old), or families (youth and adults). Priority will be give to programs serving youth and/or families in one of the designated OCSI Target Areas, and to programs and events addressing literacy/educational achievement.

Serve DC Communications Director Receives Distinguished Service Award from the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance of Washington, DC
|
 Serve DC is proud to announce that Clarence Fluker, its Director of Communications & Special Initiatives, was honored for distinguished service by the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance of Washington, DC (GLAA). Presented on April 25, 2013 at GLAA's 42nd Anniversary Reception, the Distinguished Service Award honors local individuals and organizations that have served the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community in the national capital area.
" It's very humbling to know that [I would be considered for the award], especially because of the work GLAA does," said Clarence in a Washington Blade profile. "They're really about the business of promoting equality in the District in a serious and meaningful way. They're one of the groups I most respect because of the way they push forward."
Clarence has been involved in LGBT activism in the District since his arrival in 2001, including volunteering with Mayor's Office on GLBT Affairs during the Williams Administration and serving as a former president and board member of Black Lesbian & Gay Pride Day, Inc. Clarence is also a member of the American University Black Alumni Alliance Leadership Council, the Hillwood Estate Museum & Gardens GLBT Advisory Committee, and the Young Professionals Board for Life Pieces to Masterpieces.
Founded in 1971, the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance of Washington, DC (GLAA) is an all-volunteer, non-partisan, nonprofit political organization that defends the civil rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in the Nation's Capital.
