Greetings!
- $500 million in budget cuts since 2008
- 12.5% of adults and 16.8% of children living at or below federal poverty level
- 10.6% unemployment
- 200,000 residents currently uninsured
- 100,000 residents will remain uninsured after the Affordable Care Act is implemented.
These staggering figures emerged during the Human Impact Budget Hearings convened this week by Alameda County Supervisor Wilma Chan, accompanied by heart-breaking testimonies from child care providers, single mothers, and unemployed men. Representatives of county agencies advocated for safety net programs facing further cuts or anihalation.
There was a bright spot when, at the close of the hearings, Supervisor Chan acknowledged the invaluable work done by community-based organizations, including WCRC. She also noted the great opportunity under the affordable care act to bring residents into organized systems of care.
Uninsured Alameda County residents are concentrated in Ashland, Hayward and Oakland. WCRC staff and volunteers can and will play a significant role in providing outreach and education in the community to encourage people to get health insurance.
Want to make a difference? As a WCRC volunteer, you will receive ongoing training and support as you provide community education, in-home support, high intensity cancer navigation, lead wellness workshops and much, much more.
For information about volunteering, contact Eveline.
With love and gratitude,
Peggy McGuire Executive Director
