American Water Resources Association (AWRA) Newsletter

Greetings!

Welcome November! During the month of Thanksgiving, we at AWRA HQ thought we'd share a few of the things we are thankful for:

We Survived Sandy! Thank you to our family of AWRA members and non-members for all of the concerned emails and social media posts. Some of us may have lost power, but none of us lost homes or loved ones. We were lucky and continue to be thankful each day. Thank you, again, for all of the well wishes!

Democracy and National Elections. Don't forget to vote today, November 6th. But, before you do, educate yourself on how the presidential candidates feel about climate issues by reading this article from ProPublica.org "Reading Guide: Where Romney and Obama Actually Stand on Global Warming."

The Hard Work of our Members and Committees. This month AWRA's Policy Committee published a collection of IWRM Case Studies and our various conference committees have prepared a spectacular annual conference. We also have the best members on the planet. Dedicated professionals who go to work each day with the goal of making water resources safe, usable and accessible locally, nationally and globally. Thank you!

AWRA Annual Conference. Our annual chance to see old friends and make new ones. If you haven't already made plans to join us in Jacksonville, there's still time!

Water resources education, research and management. None of the water successes we have today would exist without these three elements.

Daily access to clean water. No explanation necessary.

As I mentioned last month, this truly is a pivotal and influential time to be working in water resources education, research and management. As the last few weeks have demonstrated water is an integral part of our lives. In everything we do, AWRA strives to facilitate water resource discussions and solutions. You can be a part of those discussions and solutions. What better way to show your commitment to water resources? Join us!

Until next time,

SandyVolunteer to Help Survivors of  Sandy
Helping the Survivors of Hurricane Sandy

Before going to a disaster area, join an established volunteer organization. Communities can become easily overwhelmed by the amount of generous people who want to help immediately after a disaster. Contacting and joining an established organization will help to ensure that you are appropriately trained to respond in the most effective way. Be patient: recovery lasts a lot longer than the media attention, and there will be volunteer needs for many months. The Corporation for National and Community Service can help you find volunteer opportunities at Serve.gov.

VoterInfoVoter info? There's an app for that.
Where's my polling place? Who are the candidates? What initiatives are on the ballot? How can I contact a state or local election official? Working in partnership with Microsoft, Google, and AT&T, the Voting Information Project is working around the clock to make sure you've got the voting information you need, where and when you need it.
ReportAWRA Policy Committee Publishes "Case Studies in Integrated Water Resources Management: From Local Stewardship to National Vision"

Showcasing state, multi-state, and regional efforts to implement IWRM, this collection highlights the effectiveness of IWRM at all levels of water management. The case studies dispel the mystery behind IWRM by discussing the process of shifting to an IWRM approach and the resulting costs and benefits. Together, the selected set of cases show that IWRM is a powerful and common-sense approach for managing water in the United States. Download the publication.
