Samaritans is using the occasion of our 15th Annual 5K Run/Walk to launch our new blog, "Samaritans Stories." Currently featuring stories of why people choose to run or walk our 5K, our goal is to build our community by sharing our stories of hope and healing.

Summer is a time for reflection and planning at Samaritans. Each July, we review our accomplishments from the past year, and set goals and aspirations for the coming one. In this twelfth year of my tenure here at Samaritans, one thing that has remained the same each summer: the need to plan for increased services in response to growing need. We are thrilled that the award to Samaritans of a contract to be a part of a nationwide Crisis Text Line will give us increased capacity in the coming year, and provide a new way for young people in need to reach out for help. Another thing that has continued as a trend is the fact that, while demand for our services does not slow in the summertime, donations and support for our work does as people are busy with other priorities. While we are incredibly optimistic about our future, our present is pretty dry. If you are able to make a gift this summer, please know that it will have great impact as we work to be there for everyone who reaches out for help.

Great items in the raffle! |
We are excited this year to offer some great sports memorabilia including an autographed Tom Brady jersey, an autographed Celtics basketball, and the option to enter a raffle or "Buy Now" an autographed 2013 Boston Bruins jersey (we have two!). For information about all things 5K, please visit our event website.
The 5K is being promoted on the MBTA with car cards on a number of subway lines, and on television through the generosity Cole Creative, who have produced, and of Comcast, who are airing this 30 second public service announcement, and soon, thanks to Clear Channel Outdoors, we will have a new 5K billboard. We are so grateful for the support of our media sponsors this year and we hope that their contributions will help attract more people to this year's event.
Please contact 5K Event Director, Garrett Owen, with any questions about the 5K.

Samaritans' new Crisis Text Line program went live on August 1st, and is gearing up for increased capacity as a more formal and public launch is developed. As are part of this program expansion, Samaritans is delighted that we will now have staff on-site 24 hours a day to support our Crisis Center volunteers. In the past three weeks, we have hired three new chat/text coordinators:
Deirdre O'Donnell has joined us as the Weekday Overnight Text/Chat Coordinator. Deirdre just completed her Bachelor of Arts and Sciences at Rhode Island College. Deirdre's first day was this past last week, and she has already begun her overnight shifts!
Mandie Wallinger, upon completing her Commonwealth Corp position at the end of July, has accepted a staff role at Samaritans as the Weekend Overnight Text/Chat Coordinator, starting last weekend.
Jeremiah Mankin, a helpline volunteer for over a year, has accepted the staff role of Weekend Day Text/Chat Coordinator and he also started last weekend.
We are so excited to have such wonderful additions to Crisis Services Team as we expand our services in this new and exciting way! |
