We are often referred to as Good Samaritans, and we politely let people know that we are Samaritans and we like to think we are good.
We know that each and every day our volunteers are good Samaritans when they are present on our phones 24/7 and listen to those who reach out for compassion. Our volunteers who support those who have lost a loved one to suicide are also good Samaritans, because it takes a special type of person to be present when someone is grieving and needs help in their healing. And those who instruct others about the warning signs, risk factors and working with those in crisis are also very good Samaritans. All of them make a difference. All of them create hope. And sometimes their kindness saves lives.

Samaritans 2013 "Faces of Suicide" Panel: Samantha Joseph, Robert McGuiness & Melida Arredondo |
Within our community there are many good Samaritans, but on April 15th there was a couple - Melida and Carlos Arredondo - who demonstrated what is best about being a Samaritan. Selflessly, when the explosions occurred, they rushed towards those who were injured. Carlos in his cowboy hat, aiding Jeff Bauman with help that was literally life-saving, is an image that has stayed with us in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon. But for those of us who have known Melida and Carlos, and who know their brave and courageous responses to the loss of their son Alex to the war in Iraq, and the loss of their son Brian to suicide several years later; the image holds a special poignancy. Recently Melida spoke movingly at the Annual Massachusetts State Suicide Prevention Conference. Carlos and Melida have long encouraged their elected officials - locally and nationally - to provide more services to military families impacted by grief and suicide. They are always available - whether at our 5K Run/Walk, or at local festivals and gatherings like the Marathon - to support other families impacted by suicide.

At the Breakfast for Hope on Wednesday morning, May 15th we will celebrate Carlos and Melida and their life saving actions. Melida and Carlos are just two of the amazing people Samaritans has the privilege of calling members of our community.
Join with us. Bring others with you. Help us ensure that all of our good Samaritans can go on helping others - each and every day.
